Lexington Legends News Release
Lexington Legends third baseman Matt Duffy has been added to the list of participants for the Miller High Life Home Run Derby as part of South Atlantic League All-Star game festivities in Charleston, South Carolina next week.
The league announced today (Friday) that Duffy would replace Tyler Austin of Charleston, who withdrew from the competition. Duffy will join Legends teammate Zach Johnson and eight other South Atlantic League All-Stars in the Home Run Derby. The list includes five players from each division. (The complete list is in the attached news release from the South Atlantic League.)
"Matt will be a great addition to the Home Run Derby field," said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. "He's having an outstanding season, and is among the best hitters for average and power in the South Atlantic League."
The first round of the homer-hitting contest will take place Monday, June 18 at 11 a.m. on the deck of the USS Yorktown, which is stationed at Patriots Point in Charleston Harbor. The championship round will be held Tuesday, June 19 at 5:15 p.m. at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park, home of the Charleston RiverDogs and site of the All-Star game. First pitch for the game, which will match the Northern Division against the Southern, is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Duffy leads the Legends with 11 home runs. Johnson has hit 10. Through Thursday's games, Duffy is tied for eighth in the league in hitting with a .322 average, and Johnson is second in runs batted in with 61. Seven Legends were named to the Southern Division All-Star roster. The others are second baseman Delino DeShields Jr., and pitchers Mike Foltynewicz, Carlos Quevedo, Nick Tropeano and Jason Chowning. Chowning, a native of Louisville, has since been promoted to advanced-A Lancaster in the California League and will not participate in the SAL All-Star game.
