Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Jeff Arnold broke a 1-1 tie with a home run on the first pitch he saw in the seventh inning to lead the Augusta GreenJackets to a 2-1 win over the Greenville Drive on Friday night in front of 5,832 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The GreenJackets have won ten of their last 12 games and have equaled a season-long with their current four-game win streak.
Arnold homered off Greenville reliever Justin Erasmus (0-1), who retired the first seven hitters he faced in relief of Drive starter Noe Ramirez. In the eighth, the Drive had runners at the corners with no one out on back-to-back singles. Paul Davis (3-2) worked out of the jam thanks to a caught stealing, a strikeout and a fly out as the GreenJackets held their one-run lead. Davis fired two scoreless innings to get the win, striking out three.
In the ninth inning, Kyle Vazquez struck out two of the three hitters he faced - retiring the side in order to seal the win and earn his third save of the season.
For the third straight game in the series, Greenville jumped out to the first lead. In the third inning, an error allowed Blake Swihart to score from third and give the Drive a 1-0 advantage. Augusta tied the game in the bottom of the inning, putting Brett Krill at first to lead off the inning on a Greenville error. Krill took third on a hit-and-run play and scored to tie the game when Kelby Tomlinson stole second and the throw went into the outfield.
Edwin Escobar was strong through six innings, striking out a career-high ten and becoming the fourth Augusta starter this season - and the second against Greenville - to strike out ten in a single-game. Escobar allowed three hits and an unearned run while walking a pair. Greenville starter Noe Ramirez lasted just four innings in his second professional start, allowing an unearned run on six hits and two walks. Augusta was only able to score the one run against Ramirez in large part thanks to a pickoff and the fact that the GreenJackets hit into a pair of double plays.
The win is Augusta's 15th one-run victory - a total that leads the South Atlantic League. The GreenJackets are also 5-1 on their current eight-game homestand with two games left to play in the first half.
On Saturday, the GreenJackets look to extend their winning streak to five games as they send Joe Biagini (0-3, 7.62) to the mound to face Greenville's Scott Swinson (3-0, 1.70). It'll be Southeastern United Dairy Industry Association (SUDIA) Night at the ballpark and SUDIA will be on hand for giveaways. They'll also have their mobile classroom set up outside the ballpark, as well as a live cow. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
