(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Rosell Herrera's three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning erased a one run deficit and gave the Asheville Tourists a 5-3 win over the Lexington Legends Friday night.
Asheville opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. With one out, Tyler Massey singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Jared Simon. Herrera followed with a single, scoring Simon.
Lexington answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Matt Duffy led off with a walk, moved to second on Mike Kvasnicka's infield single, and scored on Justin Gominsky's single.
The score remained 2-1 until the eighth, as both starting pitchers settled down. Lexington's Luis Cruz worked eight innings, allowing only the two second-inning runs. He struck out five batters and walked one. Chris Jensen went seven innings for the Tourists, allowing one run on four hits.
The Legends rallied to take the lead with two runs in the eighth. Chan Jong Moon led off with a single, but was forced at second on an unsuccessful sacrifice attempt by Jose Fernandez. Fernandez then stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Asheville catcher Ryan Casteel, and scored the tying run on a single by Delino DeShields Jr. DeShields stole second and advanced to third on another throwing error by Casteel. With the infield drawn in, Jay Austin hit a sharp liner off the glove of third baseman Herrera, and DeShields scored the go-ahead run. DeShields had two steals in the game, and leads the South Atlantic League with 45 stolen bases, three short of the Legends single-season record set by Josh Anderson in 2004.
The Tourists wasted no time in the ninth against Legends reliever Carlos Quevedo. Massey doubled, Simon singled and Herrera lined his first home run of the year over the wall in right field to put Asheville up 5-3.
Gominsky doubled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Moon's long fly to center field was caught near the wall by Brian Humphries to end the game.
Russell Brewer (1-1) picked up the win after coming into the game in the eighth.
Quevedo (4-2) who entered the game in the ninth, took the loss.
Asheville has won the first two games of the four-game series, which continues Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
