Hickory Crawdads News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws edged the Hickory Crawdads, 4-3, before 8,000 fans at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood on Friday night.
The 'Dads (36-31) took an early lead in the top of the third inning. With one down, 1B Jhonny Gomez worked a walk and quickly moved to second on a wild pitch. CF Chris Grayson followed with an RBI double to right field, plating Gomez for the 1-0 lead.
However, Lakewood (24-43) responded right away, tying the game in the bottom of the third. C Bob Stumpo led off with a double, before DH Kyrell Hudson dropped a bunt down the first base line. Hickory RHP Nick Martinez fielded the ball, but fired wide of first base, enabling Stumpo to score for the 1-1 tie.
The BlueClaws then moved in front in the bottom of the fifth. With two away, Hudson singled to extend the inning. He then advanced to third on a SS Carlos Perdomo base hit, before sprinting home on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
This time, the Crawdads worked it even with a run in the top of the sixth. With one down, 2B Luis Sardinas singled his way on, and then stole second and third base on consecutive pitches. One out later, DH Zach Cone ripped an RBI single to center field, plating Sardinas to square the score, 2-2.
After the BlueClaws edged in front again with a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Crawdads battled it back even in the top of the eighth. Gomez sparked the Hickory offense again, this time with a single to start the stanza against RHP Mike Nesseth (W, 5-1). Grayson bounced a ball to second, but 2B Alejandro Villalobos misplayed the grounder, allowing Gomez to get all the way to third and Grayson to reach second base on the play. Sardinas then lofted an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Gomez for the 3-3 tie.
Lakewood again had an answer, moving in front in the bottom of the eighth against LHP Will Lamb (L, 0-6). Perdomo led off with a walk, and then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Villalobos. After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, 1B Chris Duffy drove an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, lifting Lakewood to the 4-3 lead.
BlueClaws RHP Colton Murray (S, 4) disallowed another Crawdads comeback, tossing a scoreless bottom of the ninth to close the 4-3 win for Lakewood.
