Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-25) added two more names to the 100-hit club in a 4-1 win over the Sioux City Explorers (15-27) on Monday night at Lewis & Clark Park. Trevor Lawhorn and Cory Harris both recorded their 100th hits of the season on the Canaries way to victory.
The Canaries took the lead on the very first batter of the game. Joe Anthonsen tripled up the first base line, and the relay throw to third by Sioux City second baseman Alex Llanos skipped by the bag, allowing Anthonsen to come home and score the game's first run, giving the Birds the early 1-0 advantage.
The Birds added another run in the fourth inning. Beau Torbert singled and stole second base to put a runner in scoring position with two outs for Trevor Lawhorn. Lawhorn, who had become the 21st player in Canaries history to record 100 hits in a single-season when he singled in the second inning, doubled up the left-field line. Lawhorn's double brought home Torbert for a 2-0 lead.
The Canaries scored without the benefit of a hit in the sixth inning. The bases were loaded on a walk and back-to-back hit batters. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kyle Eveland drew an RBI walk to score Torbert for a second time and give the Canaries a 3-0 cushion.
Cory Harris got his 100th hit of the season in the top of the eighth inning. Harris led off the inning with his ninth home run of the season, to put the Birds in front by four, 4-0. Harris became the 22nd player in Canaries history and fourth this season to join the 100-hit club.
Sioux City got one run in the ninth inning. With two outs, Boomer Berry singled, advanced to second on a walk to Alex Llanos, and scored on a single by Norm Hutchins. The run would be the only one the Explorers got in the 4-1 Canaries win.
Jino Gonzalez (4-6) picked up the win, throwing 6.2 shutout innings allowing just four hits and six walks. Nick Singleton (5-7) pitched the complete game for Sioux City, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits in taking the loss. Aaron Cotter struck out Greg Stevens to end the game and record his eighth save of the season.
