Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Quincy Latimore hit a pair of home runs and Yunesky Sanchez added another as the Altoona Curve blast their way past the Reading Phillies by the score of 6-3 on Saturday night at Blair County Ballpark. With the win, the Curve have won 12-of-17 and the first two in the three-game series against the R-Phils, giving them their fourth straight series victory.
The game started well for the R-Phils as they shot out to a 2-0 lead on Curve starter Phil Irwin, but he would settle down and the Curve bats would heat up. In the bottom of the second Andrew Lambo singled to lead the inning off and he was driven home by Tony Sanchez who doubled to the corner in right to cut the lead to 2-1.
With a runner on second and two down in the second, the Phillies could have decided to walk Yunesky Sanchez and pitch to Irwin, who is hitless on the year, however, Tyson Brummett (3-7) pitched to Sanchez and he hit his second home run of the season, a two run shot to give the Curve a 3-2 lead.
The Curve would add to their lead the next two innings as Starling Marte scored on a ground ball double play in the third and Latimore hit his first home run of the game to lead off the fourth to expand the lead to 5-2.
As the Curve were scoring runs, Irwin was mowing down batters as he put up three straight scoreless innings, allowing a third run in the sixth before exiting after six in a 5-3 ballgame. Irwin allowed three earned over his six innings with eight hits and seven strikeouts with no walks.
After Irwin, Bryan Morris pitched two scoreless innings before Latimore blasted his second no-doubter of the game, a solo shot to left and his 13th of the season to give the Curve a 6-3 lead. This is the third time this season Latimore has had a multi-home run game, and with it, he ties Jordy Mercer for the overall team lead in home runs.
Despite having two tough outings this season against Reading, Noah Krol was summoned to pitch the ninth inning with a three-run lead and he was very effective as he pitched around a leadoff walk to retire the side and earn his 19th save of the season.
Irwin (6-3) earned the win for the Curve in the game and now sits alone at the top of the Pirates Minor League System in wins as he is now 11-3 across two levels. For the Curve in the game on 12 hits, Marte, Lambo, Tony Sanchez, Latimore and Yunesky Sanchez each had multi-hit games.
The weekend series concludes on Sunday at 6 p.m. with Sunday Night Fireworks, as the Curve will host another spectacular fireworks display following the game. Also Sunday, the Curve will be giving away 750 drawstring bags to fans 14 & under, thanks to Ravine Screen Printing and Embroidery. The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) will be holding their annual picnic and silent auction to raise awareness and funds to fight the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. The Children's Miracle Network will also host their Princess & Pirate Party. Fans should also remember to bring their glove as the Curve will host a pregame catch on the field from 5 p.m. to 5:25 p.m. and kids will get to run the bases after the game.
On the mound for the Curve as they look for their first series sweep of the season on Sunday will be RHP Tim Alderson (0-3, 4.03) and he will be opposed by RHP Austin Hyatt (10-6, 4.03). Game time is set for 6 p.m. and great seats for the game are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.CURVE or by visiting www.AltoonaCurve.com.
