Early Runs Lead to Erie Loss in Portland

The SeaWolves could not overcome early Portland runs on Saturday night at Hadlock Field, falling to the Sea Dogs 8-4 in the middle game of the series.

The Sea Dogs struck in the bottom of the first inning against Erie starter Brooks Brown. Ryan Khoury led off and doubled and Alex Hassan walked putting two on. Khoury got to third when Will Middlebrooks hit into a double play and scored on a wild pitch. Matt Spring followed with a solo home run to center for a 2-0 Portland lead.

In the second, Jeremy Hazelbaker led off, singled and stole second. With one out, Hazelbaker stole third and scored on a John Murrian throwing error for a 3-0 Portland lead.

Portland added to its lead once again in the third. Middlebrooks singled and Spring doubled with one out putting two in scoring position. Ronald Bermudez singled home Middlebrooks for a 4-0 lead. Spring scored on a Hazelbaker groundout for a 5-0 Portland advantage.

Portland increased its lead once again in the fourth. With two outs, Khoury singled and was doubled home by Hassan for a 6-0 lead. Middlebrooks followed with an RBI double making it 7-0 Sea Dogs.

The SeaWolves broke through against Portland starter Alex Wilson in the top of the fifth. Cale Iorg, Brent Wyatt and Brandon Douglas all singled loading the bases with one out for Justin Henry. Henry hit into a fielder's choice plating Iorg making it 7-1. Deik Scram and Audy Ciriaco followed with back-to-back infield singles scoring Wyatt and Henry making it 7-3.

Portland extended its lead once again in the sixth against reliever Robbie Weinhardt. Khoury walked with one out and moved to second on a Hassan groundout. Middlebrooks singled home Khoury to make it 8-3 Sea Dogs.

The 'Wolves got one back in the ninth against Blake Maxwell. Johnson singled with one out and came home on a Henry RBI double to make it 8-4. The 'Wolves would get no closer.

Brown (2-8) took the loss, his second straight. The Erie righty allowed seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work.

The SeaWolves and Sea Dogs meet in the rubber game of the three game series on Sunday afternoon...1:00 First Pitch. Lefty Casey Crosby (7-5, 3.84 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Charlie Haeger (2-0, 3.71 ERA).
