B-Mets Flatten Squirrels in Middle Game, 7-0

BINGHAMTON, NY - Right-hander Jeurys Familia controlled the Richmond Flying Squirrels (64-55) for five innings as the Binghamton Mets (50-70) rolled to a, 7-0, shutout victory in front of 3,194 at NYSEG Stadium on Saturday night.
After two scoreless innings, the B-Mets broke through for the first time against Richmond right-hander Justin Fitzgerald in the third inning. Niuman Romero started trouble with a lead-off single. Familia bunted him to second, and Matt Den Dekker gave Binghamton the lead with an RBI single. Jon Malo followed with a single, and Juan Lagares brought home Den Dekker with a single for a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Familia (3-3) was cruising. He worked five dominating innings for the win, shutting out the Squirrels on two hits. He walked none and struck out seven in the victory, his third of the season.
Binghamton tacked on a run in the fifth inning against Fitzgerald to take a 3-0 lead. Lagares sparked the inning with a one-out single. Allen Dykstra followed with a groundball to first base that Wes Hodges attempted to take to second base. He hit Lagares in the back, and both runners reached safely on the error. Michael Fisher made it 3-0 when he followed with a single through the hole on the right-side of the infield.
Fitzgerald (8-7) worked into the seventh inning before departing to the loss after a two-out walk to Fisher. Wilmin Rodriguez replaced Fitzgerald and surrendered a two-run home run to the first batter he faced, Raul Reyes. The high-arching shot to right field put the B-Mets in front, 5-0, and cemented the final line for Fitzerald. He conceded four runs - three earned - on eight hits, walked three and struck out five.
Den Dekker supplied the exclamation point for Binghamton in the eighth inning, capping the scoring in the ballgame with a two-run home run off of Richmond left-hander David Quinowski. Den Dekker finished the ballgame with three runs driven in, leading the attack for Binghamton.
Right-hander Jack Egbert allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings of relief to earn his third save of the season.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:35 PM at NYSEG Stadium on Sunday night. LHP Chuck Lofgren will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Collin McHugh for the B-Mets. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:05 PM, and can be heard on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com.
