Buffalo Bisons News Release

It seemed Buffalo had to play catch up all game to keep even with the IronPigs. But a late-inning surge by Lehigh Valley was one Buffalo couldn't come back from.

The Bisons lost the third game of the series against Lehigh Valley, 8-7, after a ninth-inning IronPigs' rally ended with a two-run walk-off single.

Buffalo went into the last inning of the game with a one-run lead, but Bobby Korecky couldn't hold down the save. Korecky allowed runners to reach on second and third with one out left to go in the frame on a single and Bisons throwing error. Chris McGuiness played hero for Lehigh Valley, hitting a bloop single to right field to score two runs and win the game for the IronPigs. Korecky picked up his second loss and blown save of the season.

Buffalo lost the lead in three separate occasions over the course of the game, but rallied for two three-run innings. The last offensive surge almost won the Herd the matchup.

Trailing by two heading into the eighth inning, Buffalo got one back after a Josh Thole single. Later in the inning, Buffalo loaded the bases for Steve Tolleson, but he hit a routine doubleplay ball to shortstop. Lehigh Valley second baseman Steve Henson rushed the throw to first base on the turn and bounced the ball past Darin Ruf. The error scored two runs and gave Buffalo the lead for the time being.

With the game tied at four apiece in the seventh inning, Darin Ruf doubled off the right field wall to score two go-ahead runs that put the Herd down 6-4.

After the third inning, the Bisons offense was stoic for a brief period after a lively three innings prior at the plate. Jonathan Diaz went deep in the second inning for his first home run of the season to give the Herd an early 2-0 lead. Daric Barton added another run in the third inning from a sacrifice fly. In the three-inning stretch, Buffalo totaled four hits, three walks and three runs while taking a temporary 3-0 lead.

Lehigh Valley did the majority of its damage in the fourth inning. Cord Phelps blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to tie the game at three for the time being. Later in the inning, the IronPigs added another run on a sacrifice fly to take a one-run lead.

Randy Wolf started for the Bisons and gave up four earned runs over five innings. He did not earn a decision.

In the top of the seventh inning, Matt Hague singled in the tying run, giving him his 27th multi-hit game of the season. He finished going 2-for-3 with a walk and increased his league-leading average to .354.

Buffalo will close out its matchup with Lehigh Valley on Thursday before the Herd departs to Syracuse for a three-game series to end the road trip. Thursday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m.
