Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Wednesday afternoon in Syracuse proved to be a day to forget for the Mud Hens. In the final game of their road trip, Toledo was beat by the Chiefs 13-5, and were swept in the three game series. Buck Farmer, who has been oustanding in Triple-A this season, had an uncharacteristic day by allowing six earned runs. The offense of Syracuse dominated, totaling 19 hits on the afternoon, which is tied for the most hits the Hens have allowed in a game all season.
The Chiefs ambushed Farmer in the first inning for five runs. Darin Mastroianni led off with a single, and that started a string of seven straight Syracuse singles. The seventh and final single of the inning came off the bat of Caleb Ramsey to drive in Rick Hague. Before there was even an out recorded, the Chiefs had scored five runs. With the bases loaded, Farmer struck out Dan Butler, and then induced a double play to get out of the inning.
Down 6-0, the Mud Hens had a big sixth inning to get them right back into the game. Victor Martinez, in his final rehabilitation game with Toledo, led off the inning with a single. After a Dixon Machado walk, Jefry Marte singled to load the bases. With one out, Steven Moya singled to center field to plate two runs. Xavier Avery and Daniel Fields worked back-to-back walks to score another run, and then Brendan Harris hit a sacrifice fly to get the Hens within two. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Melvin Mercedes came in the game to relieve Farmer, and gave back all four runs.
In the seventh inning, the Chiefs just kept piling onto their lead. With Rafael Dolis pitching, Emmanuel Burriss hit a three run homer to right field to push Syracuse's lead to 13-4. After a clean eighth inning from Bruce Rondon, Marte hit his eighth home run of the season, but that would be all for Toledo.
The Toledo Mud Hens return to Fifth Third Field on Thursday for a four game series against the Norfolk Tides. The first game of the series is Thursday night at 7 p.m.
