Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Winnipeg Goldeyes committed five errors, left eight runners on base and, despite a ninth-inning comeback, lost 6-5 in 10 innings to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Tuesday night at Neuman Outdoor Field before 2,429 chilly spectators.
In the 10th inning, Goldeyes reliever Aaron Hartsock gave up a single to Jesse Hoorelbeke, which scored Mike Coles and gave Fargo the win.
"You're not going to win very many games when you make five errors," said Goldeyes designated hitter Wes Long, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and got a day off from playing shortstop.
"We had a lot of missed opportunities - both offensively and defensively. We're trying to do a little too much. We need to focus on the little things. I am pretty sure we should have won that game tonight."
Fargo opened the scoring with a run in the first inning and went up 4-0 in the second inning when Zach Penprase hit a three-run home run to right field.
The Goldeyes struck back in the top of the third inning with three runs. Winnipeg loaded the bases when Louis Ott singled, Price Kendall reached on an error by Fargo pitcher Jake Laber and Jonathan Wyatt singled. Ott was forced out at home on a Kody Kaiser fielder's choice, but Long singled in Kendall and Wyatt and Brian Myrow drove in Kaiser from second.
The RedHawks extended their lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning when Penprase scored after Luis Alen's throw to third base trying to catch him stealing bounced past Ott and into left field.
Winnipeg stranded two runners in each of the seventh and eighth innings, but finally tied the game in the ninth. Kendall scored on a wild pitch from Alex Caldera and Rick scored on a Long single a couple pitches later to tie the game 5-5.
He blew the save in the ninth, but Caldera pitched the 10th inning for Fargo and gets the win. Hartsock takes the loss for Winnipeg. Goldeyes starting pitcher Ace Walker pitched 7.2 innings, allowed five runs - only three were earned - and struck out four. It's his second quality start of the season in three starts. Both have come against Fargo.
Wyatt left the game with a right hamstring injury and is listed as day-to-day.
This four game series between the Goldeyes and RedHawks continues Wednesday night with the third game of the set. Lefty Chris Salamida (1-0, 3.27) takes the ball for Winnipeg, while Alex Kaminsky (0-0, 2.61) gets the start for Fargo.
