Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

EL PASO, TX---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains hit three home runs including an inside-the-park job off the bat of Mike Provencher before even recording an out in the fifth inning against El Paso. The Captains routed the Diablos in the first of a three-game series, 12-4.

Provencher hit an Amad Stevens pitch to dead center field that fell at the base of the wall and scampered away from Diablos outfielder Cory Drew. Provencher was rounding third by the time the ball hit El Paso's cutoff man and he scored without sliding for the Captains third home run of the inning. Shortstop Bryan Frichter hit his first home run of the season in the previous at bat. Right fielder Bryan Sabatella knocked a solo shot to left for his first homer of the year to lead off the inning.

The Captains led the ballgame 5-0 before the Diablos even came to the plate. Following lead off walks to Robert Perry and Jeff Hulett, El Paso starter Shaun Ellis allowed an RBI single to Sabatella to start the scoring. Uriak Marquez would extend his hit streak to ten games with an RBI single in the first. Marquez would leave the game in the bottom of the inning, after being hit in the wrist by a line drive. Frichter, who had four RBIs in the game, would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly, Provencher added an RBI double and Alex Cowart would make it 5-0 with an RBI single.

Captains starter Aaron Cunningham (1-1) avoided a number of jams in the early innings to eventually throw six shut out innings to pick up his first win.

Shreveport-Bossier extended their already formidable lead with six in the fifth inning to take an 11-0 lead. That score would stand until El Paso finally got on the board in the seventh. Captains reliever Justin Young walked the bases loaded and allowed an RBI single to Chad Gabriel. Two runs would then score on Frichter's throwing error on a groundball off the bat of Kyle Nichols. The Diablos would add a run on a Butch Ballez ground out but would not get any closer as Shreveport-Bossier's relievers Jameson Maj and Alex Cowart would shut down El Paso the rest of the way.

Cowart took the mound for the first time in the bottom of the ninth and preserved the 12-4 lead, getting Manuel Mejia to ground into a double play following a lead off walk and then striking out El Paso designated hitter Gerardo Avila.

With the win, the Captains improve to 7-4 and in sole possession of first place in the American Association South. The Captains throw Danial McHenry to the mound tomorrow against El Paso's David Whigham. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. local time, 8:05 p.m. in Shreveport.
