Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GARY, IN- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 4-3 in 12 innings to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at US Steel Yard on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wingnuts rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, but Jeff Beaucham's RBI single in the bottom of the 12th allowed Gary to squeak out the win.
Brad Boyer led off the bottom of the 12th with a triple to right field off of David Miller. After Cristian Guerrero walked, Beaucham singled through the left side to snap the Wingnuts' four-game winning streak.
Trailing 3-0, and with two outs and no one on in the top of the ninth, Jorge Delgado was hit by a pitch to extend the game. Josh Workman reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second, and then Edwin Bellorin bounced a single through the right side that cut the RailCats' lead to 3-1. Mike Conroy doubled into the right field corner to score the tying runs and send the game to extra innings.
Wichita had several chances to bring in the go-ahead run over the 10th, 11th, and 12th frames, but were unable to take their first lead of the game.
Gary scratched out two runs against starting pitcher Jonathan Ellis in the bottom of the second. A hit batsman, single, and walk loaded the bases with no outs. Ellis then hit Adam Klein to force home the game's first run. Mike Massaro made it 2-0 on an infield single with a slow roller to the left of the mound. Ellis recovered and retired the next three hitters to prevent any further scoring.
Ellis went six innings, allowing just the two earned runs on three hits. Ellis walked five and struck out two.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gary scored again on a two-out, RBI single to center from Guerrero to make it 3-0.
RailCats' starter Derek Gordon pitched seven scoreless innings and took a no-decision, allowing eight hits and two walks.
Jared Simon pitched two scoreless relief innings for the Wingnuts.
The Wingnuts and RailCats finish their series on Wednesday morning at 11:10 a.m. Trent Lare goes to the mound for Wichita against right-hander Scott Shaw. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
