Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers had two chances to cash in with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of Saturday's contest at All Pro Freight Stadium, but Schaumburg's Patrick Mincey struck out Kellen Kulbacki and Andrew Davis to end the threat, as the Boomers went on to win, 6-2.
The Boomers (2-0) scored multiple runs in three separate innings, and scored the first six runs of the game before the Crushers (0-2) scored their first runs of the season on back-to-back bombs in the eighth.
The Boomers scored their first two runs in the top of the second. Frank Pfister began the inning with a solo homerun to snap the scoreless tie. Nick Kuroczko then belted a triple to the gap in right-center. Kuroczko scored moments later on Mike Valadez's sacrifice fly.
The Boomers added to their advantage in the top of the sixth inning. Nate Baumann and Kuroczko stroked back-to-back singles to start the inning. Baumann scored later in the inning after Sean Mahley reached on Jason Taylor's fielding error at first base. Kuroczko scored moments later on Andrew Cohn's sacrifice fly.
Schaumburg plated its final two runs in the eighth inning. Valadez belted a solo homer off of Josh Rickards. Mahley followed with single and came home on Chad Mozingo's sacrifice fly.
The Crushers plated their first two runs of the season in the bottom of the eighth. Joe Parsons struck out the first two batters of the inning, before Jason Taylor belted a solo homer to put the Crushers on the board. Russ Moldenhauer followed with a towering solo shot over the wall in right.
The Crushers made some noise in the ninth inning, for the second night in a row. Wally Correa smacked a one out single, before Mincey issued walks to Brian Erie and Gered Mochizuki to load the bases. Mincey then fanned Kulbacki and Davis on 15 pitches combined to end the contest.
Eric Gonzalez-Diaz (0-1) took the loss, after allowing a pair of runs on five hits and struck out four batters through five innings. Schaumburg starting pitcher Cameron Roth (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just a pair of hits while fanning three to score the victory.
Taylor was the only Crusher with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the contest, and has reached five times in eight plate appearances through the first two games of the season. Mochizuki, Moldenhauer and Erie all reached multiple times as well.
The Crushers will conclude their series with the Boomers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday evening. Right hander Mickey Jannis (0-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Crushers, and the Boomers will counter with right hander Tyler Watkins (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
