Boomers Hold off Lake Erie to Improve to 2-0

AVON, Ohio - The Schaumburg Boomers made it two consecutive victories to start the 2012 season by holding off the Lake Erie Crushers on the road Saturday night 6-2.

Frank Pfister hit the first homer in franchise history in the top of the second inning. Pfister roped a 2-1 pitch from Lake Erie starter Eric Gonzalez-Diaz over the wall in left. With one out in the inning, Nick Kuroczko posted the first triple in franchise history by splitting the outfield in right-center. Kuroczko scored when Mike Valadez lifted a sacrifice fly to right.

Schaumburg extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth with two more runs against the Lake Erie bullpen. Nate Baumann led off with a single and moved to second moments later when Kuroczko singled. Following a sacrifice bunt Sean Mahley drove home a run by reaching on an error. Andrew Cohn extended the lead to 4-0 with a safety squeeze to plate a run.

Two more runs came across in the top of the eighth inning to pad the lead to 6-0. Valadez belted his first homer with one away before Mahley singled and Cohn, a late line addition, added an infield single. A double steal set the stage for Chad Mozingo to drive home a run with a sacrifice fly. Cameron Roth, the first left-hander to appear in a game for the Boomers, pitched six quality shutout innings, allowing just a pair of hits with three walks and three strikeouts to win his season debut.

Lake Erie connected on back-to-back homers in the bottom of the eighth to claw within 6-2. Jason Taylor homered off Joe Parsons, who struck out four in 1.2 innings of work. Thomas Nelson entered with consecutive lefties and allowed a solo homer to Russ Moldenhauer. The Crushers loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Patrick Mincey struck out consecutive batters, including Andrew Davis, the 2011 Frontier League MVP Runner-Up looking, to end the game.

Gerard Hall, Kuroczko, and Cohn all posted multi-hit games the first multi-hit games in franchise history. Valadez became the first player to log multiple RBIs in a game, driving home a pair. Schaumburg came through with 12 hits at the plate after being limited to four in Friday's victory.

The first series in franchise history ends tomorrow night with the Boomers aiming for the sweep. First pitch at All Pro Freight Stadium is at 4:05 p.m. RHP Tyler Watkins (0-0, 0.00) makes his pro debut by taking on RHP Mickey Jannis (0-0, 0.00).
