CornBelters drop 7-2 decision to Windy City

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up three early runs and dropped a 7-2 decision to the Windy City ThunderBolts on Saturday night at the Corn Crib.

The ThunderBolts struck in their first time up, as Chris Wade singled and was tripled home by Michael Torres. Zach Aahkus walked and moved to second on a Billy Nowlin single. Aahkus scored when the CornBelters committed a throwing error while trying to turn a double play to put Windy City ahead 3-0 after the first half-inning.

Windy City added a run in the second when Brandon Pearl walked to lead off the frame, moved to second on a throwing error and scored on a single by Michael Torres. The ThunderBolts made it 5-0 on a line drive home run to right in the fifth inning by Chad Cregar.

The CornBelters dented the scoreboard in the fifth inning with an unearned run. Chico Gomez singled with one out and was sacrificed to second, then scored on a throwing error on a high chopper to the right side to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The ThunderBolts added two unearned runs in the sixth when Torres and Aahkus walked and later scored on a booted ground ball. The CornBelters chipped into the Windy City lead again in the sixth when Steven Felix led off with a double and scored on a one-out double by Yovan Rosa to make the score 7-2.

Windy City starter Mike Recchia took the win, while Normal starter Tyler Stovall suffered the loss by going three innings in which he gave up four runs, walked five and struck out three. The CornBelters committed four errors.

The CornBelters conclude the opening series on Sunday at 5 p.m. with left-hander Justin Albert starting for the hosts against ThunderBolt righty Duke Dykeman. It's Frontier Family Funday, with four hot dogs, four sodas and four seats are just $40, and fans receive a fleece blanket compliments of State Farm.
