Grand Slam Propels Beach Bums to a 6-4 Victory against Freedom
May 19, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY- It was Rozzi Fireworks Friday at the Home of the Florence Freedom as the Florence Freedom hosted the Traverse City Beach Bums in the second game of the three-game series.
The fans expected a fireworks display after the game, but they also witnessed some fireworks during the first three innings of the game, as the Freedom's Chris Curley hit a two-run home run in the 1st and Junior Arrojo belted a solo shot in the 3rd off of David Deminsky.
Those two early Freedom home runs were not enough, however, as the visiting Beach Bums also put on a display against Kevin Asselin. In the top of the 1st inning, Kyle Colligan hit a two-run homerun to left field, but the game-changing play came in the 3rd when Jose Vargas drove in four on a grand slam home run to left center.
After the 3rd inning when the Beach Bums were leading 6-3, there was only one other run scored by either team the rest of the ballgame when catcher Jim Jacquot drove in Peter Fatse on a two-out single in the 6th.
The Freedom's starter Kevin Asselin threw five innings, striking out five, and giving up six runs. His left-handed counterpart David Deminsky tossed 5.1 innings, punching out five, and allowing four runs.
Both bullpens were great as the Freedom's Mike Hanley, Jorge Marban, and Stephen Shackelford combined for four shutout innings and four strikeouts. Traverse City's bullpen also threw a shutout as Matt Miller, Sam Brown, and Scott Mueller totaled 4.1 scoreless innings.
The Beach Bums seemed to be cruising until the bottom of the ninth when the Freedom were down two runs, and had the bases loaded with two outs with John Malloy at the plate. After giving up a walk and a hit to the two previous batters, Mueller was able to record his first save of the season when he got Malloy to ground out to first to end the game.
The Beach Bums will go for the sweep against the Freedom on May 19, as Bennett Whitmore will square up against the Freedom's Maxx Catapano at 6:05 pm at the Home of the Florence Freedom. The final game of the series, as well as all other 95 Florence Freedom games, can be heard on RealTalk1160 and realtalk1160.com.
