London Rippers News Release

MARION, ILLINOIS - The London Rippers (0-2) gave up 6 runs in the first inning and were never able to recover, losing 9-5 to Southern Illinois (2-0).

Rippers' starter Jamie Richmond, who became the first Canadian to pitch for London, was roughed up in the 1st, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits and one error.

Richmond settled down after that, cruising through the next three innings, allowing only three hits, one run and striking out three.

The Rippers' first runs in franchise history were scored in the top of the 4th inning. Mark Samuelson walked, followed by a triple by Stephen Cardullo. Cardullo scored on Zack Larson's groundout to shortstop, making the score 6-2.

After a run in the 4th, the Miners tacked on two more in the 6th. Matt Brennan gave up two walks and hit a batter to load the bases with no outs, Adam Arnold struck out two in relief before allowing a two-run single to Chad Maddox, making it a 9-2 ballgame.

David Christensen wrote his name in the record books in the 8th with a two-run homer, the first in Rippers' history, scoring Justino Cuevas and narrowing the deficit to 9-4.

The Rippers dramatic comeback attempt fell short in the 9th, when they scored a run and loaded the bases on 3 walks and an error, but David Christensen grounded out to second with the bases loaded to end the game.

The Rippers will search for their first win in franchise history tomorrow, in the conclusion of their three-game series in Southern Illinois, facing the Miners at 5:05pm.

David Francis gets the start for London and will face off against Shawn Gilblair.
