
Miners Win Season Opener

Marion, IL - The Miners kicked off the 2012 regular season in style as they defeated the London Rippers 7-0. Dave Harden pitched great tonight threw six innings and only gave up one hit and struck out five.
The Miners got on the board first in the bottom of the first as Darian Sandford scored on a past ball by catcher Zach Larson of London with two outs. London starter Shang-An Kuo gave up two runs in 5 innings tonight as he also gave up a solo homerun to Matt Fields in the bottom of the fourth inning which gave the Miners a 2-0 lead.
The Miners added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning off London reliever Matt Schimpf as Jake Kaase scored a run via an error by London shortstop Justino Cuevas. The Miners led 3-0 headed into the top of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Miners had the bases loaded with one out when Carlos Mendez hit a two run, two out double off reliever Robert Chamra to give the Miners a 5-0 lead. The Miners added two more runs as Ken Gregory hit a two run single after Mendez.
Ryan Quigley, Albert Ayala, and Gabriel Shaw each threw a scoreless inning.
Game 2 of this three game set will be tomorrow night at Rent One Park. Daniel Calhoun gets the start for the Miners. He will be opposed by Jamie Richmond.
