Miners Defeat Rippers 9-5 in Offensive Fashion

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners bats continued rolling in game two as they defeated the Rippers 9-5. The Miners put six runs on the board in the bottom of the first against Rippers starter Jamie Richmond. With Darian Sandford and Jake Kaase on base, Chad Maddox hit a two RBI single to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. The offensive continued as Matt Fields, Sean Coughlin and Carlos Mendez all came through with hits. Ken Gregory also brought in a run via a groundout.

Daniel Calhoun got the start for the Miners as he threw 5 innings allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, walking one and striking out three. The only two runs that came against Calhoun were in the bottom of the fourth, as Stephen Cardullo Jr hit a RBI triple. Zach Larson brought him in via a groundout.

The Miners added a run in the bottom of the fourth as Darian Sandford led the inning off with a triple then a groundout by Jake Kaase brought him in to give the Miners a 7-2 lead heading into the top of the 5th. The Miners added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, courtesy of a Chad Maddox two out, two RBI hit with the bases loaded.

Ian Campbell allowed two runs tonight in his three innings of relief. A two run home run in the eighth by David Christensen put a dent into what could of been an impressive relief appearance by Campbell. He had retired six straight in his prior two innings.

Casey Fry pitched .2 innings tonight giving up a run while walking three. Max Peterson got the final out of the game.

The Miners wrap up the series tomorrow and three game home stand as they send starter Shawn Gilblair to the mound. He'll be opposed by David Francis. Pregame Show with Mike Ventola will be at 4:45 on US 97.7 and the Miners Radio Network. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05.
