Asheville Tourists News Release
GREENVILLE, SC-- For the first time in 2015, the Asheville Tourists lost a game in which they held a lead. The Tourists jumped out to an early three run lead; then held a late one run advantage before the Drive recorded a walk-off win in front of their fans. It was an entertaining from start to finish, but in the end Asheville suffered their sixth straight defeat.
In the top of the third, the Tourists broke a scoreless game by plating three runs. Wes Rogers drove in the first with a sacrifice fly to center. Asheville added another run on a throwing error while the final run of the inning came off a Drew Weeks RBI single to center.
Greenville managed one in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch. They added two more in the fourth thanks to Javier Guerra's two-run triple to right-centerfield. The game remained tied 3-3 until the top of the eighth.
With Weeks at third and Randy Reyes at first, Tourists manager Warren Schaeffer dialed up a set play with the base-runners. Reyes fell down while leading off from first, on purpose. The second Reyes hit the dirt, Weeks bolted towards the plate. Greenville's pitcher, Williams Jerez, was focused on Reyes and by the time he realized Weeks was headed home it was too late. The Tourists had stolen a run and led 4-3.
Unfortunately, the lead would not hold up. Two costly miscues led to a run in each of the final two frames for the Drive. In the bottom of the eighth, a catcher's interference call on a pitch out gave Greenville an extra-base runner. The tying run later scored on an RBI groundout.
In leading off the ninth, Guerro reached on a throwing error by Emerson Jimenez and was awarded second base. The next two batters were retired, but Derek Miller connected with a single to right which scored Guerra and gave the Drive a walk-off win; their fifth consecutive victory.
Asheville and Greenville will play a double-header on Friday with game one starting at 4:30pm and game two tentatively scheduled for 7:05pm.
