Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. (April 24, 2015) - The Kannapolis Intimidators couldn't recover from Hickory's big first inning, falling to the Crawdads 9-1 on Friday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. Kannapolis, which came into the game batting a league-best .291 on the season, mustered just four hits on the night.
The Crawdads jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of 2-run doubles in the home half of the first inning. Kannapolis starter Yelmison Peralta walked the first two batters he faced before Ronald Guzman singled to load the bases. Jose Trevino followed with a 2-run double to deep left-center field, and two batters later, Tripp Martin pulled a Peralta offering down the left field line, bringing in two more runs.
Kannapolis got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Michael Suiter led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a Christian Stringer groundout. After an error advanced Suiter to third base, Louis Lechich plated Suiter with an RBI-groundout to cut into Hickory's lead, 4-1.
Hickory extended its lead in the fourth when Travis Demeritte hit a 2-run home run (2) over the left field wall for a 6-1 lead. The Crawdads added three runs in the fifth off reliever Peter Tago, highlighted by a pair of RBI-doubles from Josh Morgan and Michael De Leon.
Crawdads starter Reed Garrett (1-1) avenged his loss in Kannapolis last week by pitching 5.0 innings, limiting Kannapolis to one unearned run on two hits en route to earning the win. Trey Lambert worked the final 4.0 innings for the save (1).
Peralta (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out three.
Jacob Morris, a 2014 Intimidators outfielder and converted relief pitcher, tossed a pair of perfect innings in the sixth and seventh, striking out two batters. Kelvis Valerio spun a perfect eighth.
The Intimidators continue this 4-game series in Hickory on Saturday at 6 p.m. when RHP Thad Lowry (2-0, 2.25) takes the ball for Kannapolis against Crawdads' LHP Brett Martin (1-0, 4.00). The Intimidators return home to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for a 7-game home stand against the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) and Rome Braves (Atlanta Braves) starting Tuesday, April 28.
