Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve could not hang on to a late lead and lost Thursday night's rubber game to the Binghamton Mets, 5-4, in the home stand finale. Max Moroff homered and drove in three runs in the game.
The Curve (62-56) fell victim to a four-run eighth inning by the Mets (64-52) and had a late rally halted.
With the Curve leading 2-1 heading to the eighth, Binghamton stormed ahead with consecutive RBI singles by Vince Belnome and Jonathan Galvez. L.J. Mazzilli cracked a two-run single later in the frame to put the Mets ahead, 5-2, against Altoona reliever Clario Perez (Loss, 0-1).
Moroff cut into the Binghamton lead with a two-run single in the eighth, but Paul Seawald (Save, 19) stranded the tying run on base that inning and pitched a perfect ninth for the Mets.
The Curve took a 1-0 lead in the fifth with a solo home run by Mel Rojas Jr., his second of the season.
After not allowing a hit in the first five innings, Curve starter Matt Benedict had a 12-inning scoreless streak snapped in the sixth inning with a solo homer by Albert Cordero to tie the game at 1-1. Benedict finished with seven innings pitched and allowed one hit and struck out seven.
With two outs in the sixth, Moroff launched a solo home run to give the Curve a 2-1 lead. It was his third homer in the last five games and seventh of the season.
Binghamton starter Rainy Lara (Win, 6-4) allowed two runs over seven innings.
The Curve remain one game behind the Akron RubberDucks for second place in the Western Division.
Altoona travels to Richmond to open a three-game set on Friday night. First pitch from The Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Steven Brault (6-3, 2.80) will start for the Curve while right-hander Joan Gregorio (1-2, 3.02) starts for the Flying Squirrels.
