Late Heroics Lift Warriors to Win over Wheat Kings

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored two goals in the third period to come from behind and beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 3-2 Saturday at Mosaic Place.

The Warriors had a strong start to the game as they used their speed to attack the Wheat Kings inside their zone which led to a couple of quality scoring chances.

As the period went on the Wheat Kings found their legs and started to generate a more consistent attack on the Warriors net.

At 11:47, the Warriors turned the puck over in-between their circles, Luka Burzan pounced on the puck and put a quick shot over the goal line to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

There was a scrum at the end of the first period which resulted in penalties for both teams which led to them playing four-on-four to start the second period.

Brandon took a penalty in the opening moments of the frame and that put the Warriors on a four-on-three power-play.

Eight seconds into the man-advantage, Ryder Korczak set up Jadon Joseph for one-time in-between the Brandon circles where he scored his second of the season to tie the game at one.

Not long after the goal, the Warriors took back-to-back penalties which the Wheat Kings capitalized on with a goal from Ben McCartney to take a 2-1 lead.

Midway through the third period, the Warriors started to drive to the Brandon net as they fought for another game-tying goal.

At 9:44, the Warriors jammed the puck to the top of the Brandon crease where Keenan Taphorn settled the puck down and tapped in his fourth of the season to tie the game at two.

Moose Jaw kept coming at the Brandon net for the rest of regulation, with 44 seconds left in the game Carson Denomie led a rush across the Wheat King line.

Denomie chipped the puck down the left boards and retrieved the puck at the goal line.  Instead of driving the net, he moved it inside the left circle for Ryder Korczak who let a quick shot go that beat goalie Ethan Kruger to give the Warriors the win.

Korczak finished with a goal and three points, Carson Denomie picked up two assists, and Bailey Brkin made 29 saves.

The Warriors are now off until Sunday, October 6th when they renew their rivalry with the Regina Pats at Mosaic Place (4pm).  Tickets are available at the Mosaic Place Box Office or online at www.mjwarriors.ca.
