Chiefs Fall in Home Opener, 3-0

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane Chiefs fell short in their home opener against the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night, losing 3-0 in front of 8,122 at Spokane Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Americans took advantage of a Spokane penalty when overage defenseman Dom Schmiemann connected at 6:41 in the second, finding a loose puck on left side to beat goaltender Lukas Parik. Tri-City padded their lead with their second power play goal of the period at 18:40 when Samuel Huo picked up his third of the season, putting the Ams ahead 2-0 headed into the final period.

The Chiefs continued to put shots on goal throughout the third period -- they finished the game with a 38-23 edge in shots on goal -- but failed to find the back of the net. Tri-City managed to add an insurance goal marker at 3:10.

Parik finished with 20 saves for Spokane while Tri-City's Beck Warm was a perfect 38-for-38, earning first star honors. The Chiefs went 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The loss was the first by Spokane against Tri-City in a home opener since 2006; the Chiefs had won nine-straight.

The Chiefs will play three games in three nights next weekend -- all against U.S. Division opponents -- beginning Friday versus Seattle at Spokane Arena.
