Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - Peter Lambert was as dominant as he has been all season; but his tough luck against the Greenville Drive continued on Saturday night. The Asheville Tourists starting pitcher tossed five shutout innings and struck out six while scattering three hits. He departed with Asheville out front 4-0 in a game the Tourists would eventually lose 6-5.
Lambert is on a strict innings limit and despite the fact he only threw 58 pitches, the right-hander took a seat after the fifth inning. His last start against Greenville, May 25, ended up as a loss even though he allowed just one run on one hit through five innings of work.
The Tourists did a nice job staking Lambert a 4-0 lead. Brian Mundell hit a sacrifice fly in the first and Mylz Jones added a sacrifice fly in the second. Carlos Herrera and Scotty Burcham connected with back-to-back RBI doubles in the third and the Tourists led 4-0 after three frames.
Greenville's bullpen of Kuehl McEachern, Jeffry Fernandez, and Victor Diaz combined to pitch the final five innings and held the Tourists to only one run the rest of the way. Asheville's bullpen had a bit more trouble.
Drasen Johnson allowed a solo Home Run to Tate Matheny in the sixth and a three- run Home Run to Trenton Kemp in the seventh. The Tourists jumped back in front 5-4 with Hamlet Marte's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, but Johnson surrendered the tying run in the top of the eighth on a weak groundball to the right side of the infield.
With the momentum lost, Asheville's offense stumbled in their final two frames where Greenville's Luis Alejandro Basabe connected with a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth plating the game-winning run.
The Tourists have now dropped six of their last eight games and all six losses have been by three runs or less with four of them ending up a one-run differential.
Asheville will have an opportunity to right the ship when Hagerstown comes to McCormick Field to finish a suspended game on Monday evening. The Tourists and the Suns will then play a three-game series that will run from Monday through Wednesday.
