Greenville Drive News Release
Asheville, NC - After falling behind early on Saturday night, the Greenville Drive fought their way back in the final half of the game and used a go-ahead single by Luis Alejandro Basabe in the ninth inning to defeat the Asheville Tourists 6-5.
With the win, the Drive (28-27) clinched a victory in the three-game series, and they sit four and a half games back of Charleston, the Southern Division leader, with 14 games remaining in the first half.
Trailing 4-0 after three innings, the Drive clawed their way back starting in the sixth, scoring all six of their runs in the final four frames. With the game tied at five in the ninth, Trent Kemp walked, moved to second on a sacrifice by J.T. Watkins and came home when the pinch-hitter Basabe delivered the game-winning hit to right field off Salvador Justo (0-1).
Jeffry Fernandez (1-1) got the win for the Drive with a perfect eighth inning of relief, and Victor Diaz set down the heart of the Tourists (27-27) lineup in the ninth to log his first save.
Asheville scored four times against Greenville starter Anderson Espinoza in the first three innings. Sacrifice flies by Brian Mundell and Mylz Jones in the first two innings made the score 2-0, and RBI doubles by Carlos Herrera and Scott Burcham in the third tacked on two more.
The Drive couldn't get anything going against Tourists starter Peter Lambert, who held the Greenville offense to three hits over five scoreless innings with six strikeouts.
The comeback began in the sixth inning with a Tate Matheny solo homer off Drasen Johnson, his fourth of the year and second of the series. In the very next inning, Trenton Kemp blasted a three-run home run to left off Johnson, his sixth, to tie the game at four.
Asheville retook a 5-4 lead on another sacrifice fly, this one by Hamlet Marte, in the bottom of the seventh, but Austin Rei tied the game back up with an RBI hit for the Drive in the eighth.
After a day off on Sunday, the Drive road trip continues with a three-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators, affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. First pitch in Monday's series opener is at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Roniel Raudes (5-1, 3.21) takes the ball for the Drive, and the Intimidators will start right-hander Luis Martinez (1-4, 4.86).
