Charleston Snake-Bitten in Ninth Inning, Drop Finale, 5-3

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs will walk away from a disappointing homestand thinking that they should have left with a series sweep. After Kannapolis took game one of the series while collecting just one hit on Thursday night, the RiverDogs had the finale snatched away on Saturday, 5-3, as the Intimidators rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to take the improbable series clinching victory in front of 4,018 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday night.

Domingo Acevedo recorded six strikeouts in his first appearance coming off of the disabled list and Jeff Hendrix went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.

Charleston (33-22) had a 3-1 lead over the Kannapolis Intimidators (22-34) going into the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Landon Lassiter singled to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout from Nestor Cortes (2-1) walked Danny Mendick, Antonio Rodriguez singled to center scoring Sullivan to make it a one run game. Corey Zangari stood at the plate next and grounded a ball to RiverDogs shortstop Kyle Holder who double clutched throwing to second base, pulling Hoy Jun Park off the bag slightly, leaving runners safe on the error. On the ensuing play, Grant Massey hit a ground ball that hit off of second base for the second time of the game, scoring both Rodriguez and Zangari on the play to take a 5-3 lead moving into the bottom half of the ninth.

Nestor Cortes had taken over for Domingo Acevedo in the top of the fourth and stayed on the hill for 5.0 innings. Cortes struck out eight Intimidator hitters, but the ninth inning got the best of him, giving up four runs (one earned) off of three hits to pick up his first loss of the season.

The RiverDogs tacked two runs on in the bottom of the fifth on a Gittens RBI groundout and a Park steal of home. Hendrix led the inning off with a single to right field. With one out, Hendrix advanced to second on a passed ball. Park then reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second. A double steal pushed the runners up 90-feet as Gittens drove in Hendrix on a ground out to second to put Charleston up 2-1. On the ensuing pitch, Park broke for the plate and stole home to put the RiverDogs up 3-1.

Charleston evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning off of a sacrifice fly from newcomer Cesar Diaz.

In the first, Mendick stood in and singled up the middle as the ball bounced off of second base into center field scoring Daily from second on the play to make it 1-0.

The Charleston RiverDogs hosted Speed Painter Tim Decker to perform a post game show for the latest rendition of "Saturdays Live at The Joe," as he quickly painted portraits of Frank Sinatra, Bill Murray, and the Statue of Liberty to dazzle the crowd at The Joe.

The RiverDogs will take Sunday off before heading to Rome to take on the Braves for the first time this season June 6-8. RHP Luis Cedeno (1-2, 2.87) is expected to toe the rubber for the RiverDogs on Monday in the first of a three-game road trip to Georgia.
