Lakeland Defeats Herd 118-111 on Second Night of Back-To-Back

OSHKOSH, Wis - The Wisconsin Herd (15-4), the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, dropped its fourth game of the season in a 118-111 loss to the Lakeland Magic (10-9) on Saturday night inside Menominee Nation Arena.
Four Herd players scored in double figures led by Jemerrio Jones and Frank Mason. Jones poured in a career-high 24 points and added 16 rebounds, three assists and season-high-tying three steals, and Mason posted 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting. For the third consecutive game, Shannon Bogues scored in double figures and had 15 points, while Jaylen Adams returned from an illness and record 14 points and three steals. A.J. Hess pitched in with 12 points and four three-pointers in a reserve role.
For the second consecutive night, Lakeland was without one of its Two-Way players as Josh Magette was transferred to the Orlando Magic prior to tip-off. B.J. Johnson, who sat out Friday's game, scored a game-high 36 points on 11 field goals, while Vic Law collected his second consecutive 30-point effort and double-double. Law had 33 points and 15 rebounds and Michale Kyser and Hassani Gravett each had 15 points. Kyser also added eight rebounds and career-high seven blocks.
Lakeland opened the game by scoring seven of the game's first nine points, but upon reaching the first media timeout, the Magic led by just one. Law picked up where he left off the night before and scored 13 first quarter points, while Jones paced all Wisconsin players with six points in the period. With under 80 seconds remaining in the stanza, Lakeland increased what was once a one-point lead to a double-digit advantage. The Magic led by as many as 12 points and maintained the advantage for most of the frame. In total, Lakeland shot 56% from the field, made six three-pointers and led 38-26 at the end of the opening 12 minutes.
The Herd tallied the first basket of the second quarter, but Lakeland responded by scoring 11 unanswered points. The run gave the Magic a 21-point lead and forced a prompt timeout by Wisconsin. Lakeland ultimately led by as many as 23 points, but with just over 11 seconds remaining in the half, the Herd pulled to within 15 on a layup by Mason. The Magic's first half success was due in large part to Law and Johnson. The duo proved to be steady in the first 24 minutes as the two players combined to score 41 of the Magic's 62 points. For the half, Lakeland shot a tick over 51% and led 62-47 at the intermission.
Wisconsin found an offensive rhythm at the outset of the third quarter and opened the period by scoring 11 of the first 16 points. The spurt cut the Herd's deficit to single digits and forced the Magic into a timeout with 8:27 on the clock. With just over five minutes to play in the stanza, Hess buried a three-pointer to make it a 76-70 game, but Lakeland responded with seven points of its own and extended its lead back to double figures. For the quarter, Wisconsin outscored the Magic by four, but trailed 91-80 heading into the final quarter.
Lakeland created further separation to begin the fourth quarter and raced out to 19-point lead on the heels of a 13-5 run. Following the Magic's spurt, the Herd sliced eight points off its deficit and made it an 11-point game with 5:24 to play. Wisconsin made it interesting down the stretch and pulled to within four with 58.3 seconds remaining in the game. Despite the aggressive comeback attempt, Lakeland concluded the contest by scoring four of the final five points. In the half, the Herd outscored the Magic by eight, but fell on the second night of a back-to-back, 118-111.
Saturday's home loss is the first for the Wisconsin since opening night on Nov. 8. The 111 points also ties the Herd's season low, which was set on Nov. 9 against Windy City. The Herd falls to 3-6 all-time against Lakeland but beat the Magic two out of three times this season to win the season series.
Wisconsin will enjoy a couple days off before embarking on a three-game road trip with stops in Chicago, Long Island and Fort Wayne. Tip-off against the Windy City Bulls is set for Friday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. CT.
