Lack of Runs Leads to Fish Dropping Series

August 21, 2011 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

While the pitching held up their end of the bargain, the offence couldn't find a clutch hit to win the series.

For the third time in the series, the Winnipeg Goldeyes left at least 10 men on base and lost 2-1 to the Lincoln Saltdogs before 4,635 fans at Haymarket Park in Lincoln.

The loss, combined with the St. Paul Saints picking up a win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Sunday afternoon, means Winnipeg's lead atop the North Division is down to four games over the Saints.

All the scoring in the game came in the first inning. A Jon Weber double scored Kody Kaiser in the top of the first inning to give Winnipeg a brief lead. The bottom of the frame, Lincoln scored their two runs with Curt Smith doubled in Phil Hawke and then Smith scored on a Jorge Cortes single.

Despite going six innings and allowing just two runs, Goldeyes starter Isaac Hess takes the loss. Lincoln starter Jino Gonzalez improved his record to 6-0 with the win. PJ Zocchi pitched the ninth inning for his 20th save of the season.

Winnipeg stranded 37 runners and scored just seven runs over the three games in Lincoln. The Goldeyes left the bases loaded in the seventh inning and two runners on base in each of the eighth and ninth innings.

Meanwhile, the Goldeyes' pitching staff posted at 2.01 ERA.

The Goldeyes welcome the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to Shaw Park Tuesday night to begin a four-game series. It's Winnipeg's last home series of the regular season. Game time is 7 p.m.
