Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WICHITA, Kansas - The Gary SouthShore RailCats, currently tied for first in the Central Division, have announced a transaction deadline deal to obtain Rico Washington from the Kansas City T-Bones.
Washington, 33, brings Major League experience to the RailCats for the final nine games of the season. The veteran was batting .310 this season with 12 homers and 75 RBIs to go with 14 stolen bases as a member of the T-Bones. Washington, who is in the lineup tonight batting fifth and playing third base, posted 38 multi-hit games with Kansas City. The left-handed hitting third baseman appeared in 14 games for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. Washington, who played 87 games for Kansas City last season, was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 10th Round of the 1997 MLB Draft.
In exchange for Washington, the RailCats have agreed to send four players to be named as well as future considerations to Kansas City. The deal is the second involving the two teams after the RailCats obtained Andy Shipman and last night's starting pitcher Trent Lare in exchange for relievers Brian Grening and Chris Little earlier this week.
In a separate move, the RailCats signed LHP T.J. Wohlever, who was at the open tryout in the spring. Wohlever, who currently resides in Granger, Indiana, spent two seasons with the Atlanta Braves organization after being drafted in the 32nd Round of the 2007 MLB Draft. To make room for Wohlever, the RailCats released outfielder Nate Bryan, who played in one game. The RailCats roster now stands at 23. The American Association allows rosters to expand to 23 players for the final 10 days of the season.
The RailCats conclude a big series in Wichita tonight at 5:05 p.m. The RailCats will send RHP Scott Shaw (10-4, 5.10) to the hill opposite RHP Junior Guerra (7-3, 3.91).
