Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts took over sole possession of first place on Sunday evening, beating the Gary SouthShore RailCats 7-2 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
By finishing the three-game sweep, the Wingnuts now have a 1.0 game lead over the RailCats in the Central Division, as well as a 1.0 game lead over both the RailCats and St. Paul Saints in the wild card standings.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Mitch Einertson drew a leadoff walk. After Josh Workman flied out to left field, Edwin Bellorin lined a hit-and-run single to center that sent Einertson to third base. Mike Conroy blooped a double into shallow center field that deflected off the glove of Toddric Johnson. The hit scored Einertson with the lead run and put runners on second and third with one out. Tommy Fitzgerald was next and hit a sharp groundball to first that bounced off the glove of Mike Rohde and into right-center. Two runs scored on the infield single and gave Wichita a 5-2 lead.
Junior Guerra kept the lead intact, allowing just two earned runs on six hits over eight full innings for the win. Guerra walked three and struck out two.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Workman hit a groundball to second base that Chris Carrara gloved and threw to second for a force play. Einertson slid into second base and helped break up a potential double play which allowed the Wingnuts to score two more runs.
Eric Gilliland, pitching for the first time since July 11th, worked around a leadoff single and tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the win. Gilliland was activated from the Inactive List late Saturday night.
Gary scored first for the first time in the series in the top of the second. Cristian Guererro led off with an infield single and advanced to second when Rico Washington walked. Johnson hit a soft groundball to third that advanced each runner one base, setting up a sacrifice fly to left from Rohde.
Wichita responded in the bottom of the inning. With Jorge Delgado on first and one out, Einertson homered for a second straight night to give Wichita a 2-1 advantage. Einertson's blast went to deep left-center field. Einertson has now hit safely in five games in a row.
Gary briefly tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run to left from Guerrero.
Scott Shaw started and took the loss for the RailCats. Shaw allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in five-plus innings, walking three and striking out one.
The Wingnuts have Monday off and then open a four-game series against the Amarillo Sox on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Derek Blacksher will be on the mound for the Wingnuts. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
