6/30/05 Game Recap

@ West Michigan 3, Clinton 2

Ace Walker (3-8; 3.00) suffered yet another tough luck loss in spite of giving the LumberKings eight very strong innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on nine hits and a pair of walks while fanning one.

Walker surrendered a no-out single in the bottom of the ninth and followed with a wild pitch that allowed the hitter to reach third. He then intentionally walked the next two to load the bases and surrendered a ground ball single that gave West Michigan the winning run.

Center fielder Brandon Boggs went 2-3 including a solo homer, his fourth of the year, and third baseman Emerson Frostad went 3-4 with a double to pace the Clinton lineup.

@ West Michigan 2, Clinton 0

The LumberKings fell to 4-5 while being manhandled by West Michigan's Andrew Kown who allowed just two hits in seven innings while fanning eight. Clinton managed just three hits all night, all singles off the bat of catcher Kevin Richardson (.263 / .365 / .411).

Starter Kyle Rogers (3-5; 6.10) went five, allowing two runs, one earned on three hits and five walks in five innings of work before 2005 15th rounder Kea Kometani, Pepperdine's ace this spring, made his MWL debut, tossing two no-hit frames.

07/02/05 Game Recap

@ West Michigan 7, Clinton 6

West Michigan scored six over the final two innings to post a come from behind victory over the 4-6 LumberKings who wasted an outstanding start by the improving Michael Schlact (4.58 ERA), who went six, allowing just one run on five hits.

Brandon Cashman doubled, walked, took one for the team, stole two bases and scored twice from the top of the Clinton order while catcher Kevin Richardson (.267 / .366 / .410) remained hot, going 2-5 to drive in a pair of runs. Andrew Wishy and Casey Benjamin both went 2-5, and Benjamin's night included a home run.

Roberto Perez surrendered four runs in the eighth inning and Mike Padgett, who was Clinton's most effective pitcher in June, allowed one in the eighth and the final, game winning run in the ninth.

07/03/05 Game Recap

@ West Michigan 12, Clinton 8

In Saturday's report, I advised you to "keep an eye on center fielder Brandon Boggs, a 2004 fourth round selection out of Georgia Tech who has struggled terribly throughout his brief pro career. Though he hit just .239, he reached base at a .350 clip and showed some power, slugging .463 with four homers."

Yesterday, Boggs (.261 / .378 / .457) made me look good, going 4-4 with a walk and a home run, driving in three runs from the top of the Clinton order, but it wasn't enough to overcome a rough start from Eric Hurley and a very poor performance by reliever Marc Lamacchia.

Hurley (3.86) surrendered five hits in five innings. Hurley walked two and fanned just one. Lamacchia yielded five runs on five hits and a walk in 1.2 frames.

June 2005 Recap

In Clinton, the pitchers who were so dominant in April and May regressed for the most part. John Bannister got hit at a .343 clip while posting a 8.46 ERA. Reliever Kevin Altman posted an 11.65 ERA in 17 innings. Ace Walker went an unlucky 0-4 in six starts, putting up a 4.62 ERA. Kyle Rogers held the MWL to a .240 average, but posted an ERA of 5.31 due in large part to the fact that he issued 15 walks. Michael Schlact, on the other hand, continued to get just a little better, posting a 4.30 ERA and issuing just three walks in 29.1 innings. Eric Hurley held the league to a .215 batting average while putting up an ERA of 4.70 in 30.2 innings. He fanned 25, but walked 12. Keep an eye on center fielder Brandon Boggs, a 2004 fourth round selection out of Georgia Tech who has struggled terribly throughout his brief pro career. Though he hit just .239, he reached base at a .350 clip and showed some power, slugging .463 with four homers. Catcher Kevin Richardson had an outstandi! ng month, hitting .315 / .448 / .481.
