Chiefs blow 3-0 lead, lose in extras

Geneva, IL -.The Peoria Chiefs blew a 3-0 9th inning lead and lost 4-3 in 10 innings to the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium. With the loss the Chiefs fall to 6-7 on the half and 41-42 on the season.

Javier Herrera led off the 10th with an infield single off reliever Victor Ramos. Herrera was forced at second but Eddie Kim advanced to second on a wild throw by shortstop Joe Simokaitis who was attempting to complete a double play. After a flyout and an intentional walk, Luis Perez won the game with a single down the left-field line.

Trailing 3-0, the Kane County Cougars rallied for three runs against Chiefs closer Jerry Blevins in the bottom of the 9th inning. After a strikeout, Blevins walked Jose Pineda and Luis Perez reached on an infield single up the middle. Pinch hitter Ryan Ruiz popped out to center before Blevins walked Gregorio Petit on four pitches to load the bases. Nicholas Blasi cleared the bases and tied the game with a double into the right-field gap.

The Chiefs got on the board in the 4th inning against Cougars left-hander Trent Peterson. With one out, Luis Montanez doubled just inside the right field line and advanced to third on a soft single to right by Bo Flowers. Anthony Granato, delivered a sacrifice fly to right to score Montanez for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.

The Chiefs added a run against reliever Marcus McBeth in the 7th. Aaron Smith singled with one out and McBeth walked Joe Simokaitis and Sam Fuld back to back to load the bases with one out. Eric Patterson delivered the Chiefs second sacrifice fly of the game for a 2-0 lead as Smith scored by sliding under the tag from Cougars catcher Roberto Arias.

Peoria got another run in the 8th when Montanez led off with his third double of the game. He now leads the MWL with 27 doubles. Montanez stole third during Flowers' at-bat and came home when the throw from Kane County catcher Roberto Arias sailed into left field.

The Cougars threatened early, but couldn't push a run across against Chiefs starter Chris Shaver. Kane County had two runners on with one out in both the 2nd and 3rd innings but Shaver induced inning ending double plays in both cases. In the 5th, Kane County got runners on first and second with nobody out but Shaver got Nicholas Blasi to fly out before he struck out Cliff Pennington and got a fielders' choice grounder from Javier Herrera to end the threat.

Shaver (4-6) picked up the win after tossing five shutout innings. He allowed just four hits and four walks while striking out four and left after the 5th with a 1-0 lead. Shaver lowered his ERA on the road to 3.17 on the season and to 4.05 overall. Adalberto Mendez tossed three shutout innings allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Luis Montanez (LF) - Montanez doubled in the 4th, 6th and 8th innings and scored two of the Chiefs three runs. He leads the MWL in doubles with 27, leads the Chiefs in hits with 94 and is among the MWL leaders in extra base hits and slugging. Notes... Sam Fuld singled in the 1st to extend his hit streak to 17 games...Fuld has singled in the first inning in six of the last seven games as the leadoff hitter...Blevins has blown five save opportunities on the season...Montanez also doubled three times at Kane County on May 7th...The two teams now head to Peoria for a two game series that starts Wednesday at 7:00 PM...The Chiefs will have RH Jesse Estrada (4-8) on the mound against LH Ryan Ford (7-4)...The game can be heard on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
