Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (July 5, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (5-8, 39-44) tied a season-high with three home runs and rallied from down 5-1 to beat the South Bend Silver Hawks (9-4, 50-33) 8-7 at Community Field tonight. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Bees and evens this series at a game apiece.
South Bend got out early against Bees' starter Luis Cota. Emilio Bonifacio led off the game with a triple and after a walk to Jerem Milons, Agustin Murillo singled to drive in the first run. After a strikeout, Cesar Nicolas lined a double to right-center field to drive in both runners and increase the lead to 3-0. The Bees bounced back with a run in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Geraldo Valentin, but in the top of the second, Murillo singled in two more to put the Silver Hawks up 5-1. The Bees got another back in the bottom of the third when Mario Lisson tripled and scored on a groundout by Valentin.
In the top of the fifth, Nicolas led off with a homer to left for a 6-2 Silver Hawk lead, but Kenard Springer answered that with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth and make it 6-3. Justin Sherman took over for Cota in the top of the sixth and pitched a scoreless inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Valentin singled and went to second when Carlos Gonzlaes tried to throw behind him at first and threw the ball through two teammates to the backstop for an error. Rusty Brown followed with a single to left to drive in Valentin and Brian McFall doubled to right-center to drive in Brown to cut the lead to 6-4. The Bees loaded the bases on a sacrifice bunt and an error and a walk to knock South Bend starter Chris Kinsey out of the game. Hipolito Guerrero came in and got out of the jam with a strikeout of Springer and by getting pinch-hitter Damaso Espino to ground into a double play.
The Silver Hawks got a run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Javier Brito, but the Bees finished off their comeback in the bottom of the inning. Irving Falu led off with a double to extend his hitting streak to 23 in a row and Lisson blasted a two-run homer to left to tie the game. Valentin tripled down the right field line and Brown walked. After a popout by McFall, Darwinson Salazar hit a ground ball to third that looked like it might be an inning-ending double play, but Murillo booted it for an error and Valentin scored to put the Bees ahead 8-7.
Chad Blackwell took over in the eighth and finished the final two innings for his team leading fifth save. Sherman (1-2) picked up his first win of the season. Guerrero (2-2) suffered the loss.
