Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Kyle McCulloch was named Carolina League pitcher of the week earlier this month and his performance tonight might earn him the award for a second time. The former first round pick in 2006 out of the University of Texas shut down Potomac, as Winston-Salem edged out a 1-0 win over the Nationals on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. McCulloch (6-5) collected season highs with eight innings tossed and nine strikeouts without allowing a walk to pick up his third consecutive win.

Winston-Salem took the lead in the second inning as Tyler Reves walked on four pitches and moved to third base on a bloop single to left field by Brandon Johnson with one out. C.J. Lang brought Reves home by hitting a slow roller to the right side of the infield for an RBI groundout to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. Potomac would threaten with two base runners in the ninth inning, but Warthogs closer John Lujan struck out Brett McMillan end the game and collect his seventh save of the season.

Potomac starting pitcher Justin Jones (2-3) worked five innings and allowed one run on four hits but picked up the loss. The Nationals bullpen was equally effective as three relievers combined to limit Winston-Salem to just one hit in the final four scoreless frames. Brandon Johnson was the only player on either squad with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

The finale of this three-game series will take place on Saturday, June 23 at Richard Pfitzner Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. The Warthogs will send LHP Ryan Rodriguez (3-4, 5.05) to the mound and the Nationals will counter with RHP Craig Stammen (4-4, 4.50).
