Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

SALEM, VA - Jonny Venters was one out away from working seven scoreless innings, but a throwing error by Eric Campbell gave Salem an extra out to work with in the bottom of the seventh. The Avalanche didn't squander the opportunity as they scored four runs in the inning to erase a three-run deficit in a 4-3 win over the Pelicans before 4,959 fans at Memorial Stadium Friday night. Salem improved to 1-1 in the second half and 42-29 overall, while the Pelicans fell to 1-1 and 31-40.

Avalanche starter Raymar Diaz was brilliant his first time through the lineup, retiring the first nine hitters he faced before Jordan Schafer led off the top of the fourth with a first-pitch double to left-center. Schafer then advanced to third on a groundout by Elvis Andrus, and Campbell followed with a sharp RBI single to left past the drawn-in infield to stake Myrtle Beach to a 1-0 lead. Just two pitches later Isaiah Ka'aihue made it 3-0 when he crushed a two-run homer to left-center.

That lead looked to be plenty for Pelicans starter Jonny Venters, as he cruised into the seventh having allowed only three hits while facing just one over the minimum. Venters then recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, and with the bases empty Orlando Rosales hit a routine chopper to Campbell at third base. Campbell's throw to first was short however, and Ka'aihue was unable to pick it out of the dirt at first. Chris Johnson then drove an RBI double to the gap in left-center for his first Carolina League hit, and Mark Ori worked Venters for a walk to put men at first and second. After a visit at the mound, Billy Hart grounded an RBI double just inside the third base bag to score Johnson making it 3-2. Jose Lopez then capped the rally with a two-run single to left to put the Avalanche ahead for good, 4-3.

Myrtle Beach had some chances to tie or take the lead in the last two innings, but left runners on the corners in the eighth and then stranded Paul Bennett at third in the ninth after he had led off with a single.

The comeback made a winner out of Salem's Enyelbert Soto (3-2), as he worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Avs. Venters (0-3) was saddled with a tough loss, allowing four runs (none earned) and six hits in a season-high 6.2 innings. He walked two and struck out two. Ryan McKeller got the final five outs for his third save in as many chances. Ka'aihue finished 2-3 with a walk and his 15th home run of the year, becoming just the 11th player in franchise history to hit at least 15 bombs in a single season. Campbell collected two hits for the second straight night and has driven in three runs in the last two games, and Bennett's ninth-inning knock extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games.
