Salem, VA -- The Salem Avalanche, Class A Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, played for four hours and 12 minutes Thursday night with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and saw the visitors take a 65 decision in 13 innings on LewisGale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Jose Camarena's RBI single proved to be the game winner for the Pelicans.

In the 13 th , Pelican outfielder Matt Young opened with a slow ground ball past Rory Shortell on the mound toward second base. He reached first on an infield single. Then, Paul Bennett sacrificed Young to second base. Jose Camarena followed with a bouncing ball down the first base line that was deemed fair. That brought Young home despite the protest of Salem manager Jim Pankovits.

In the bottom of the inning, Mitch Einertson was hit by a pitch with one out by reliever Kevin Gunderson. Then, Billy Hart's infield single put runners at first and second. Justin Tellam followed with a fielder's choice to third that erased Hart and moved Einertson to third. With two out, Eric King struck out to finish the game.

Myrtle Beach led 5-4 in the ninth inning when Sung Ki Jung entered as the Pelican pitcher. He coaxed Orlando Rosales into a fly ball to the outfield. Next, though, Ryan Reed pasted a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence to tie the game and push the game to extra innings. All told, the teams used 11 pitchers, combined for 19 hits and eight errors. Two hitters from each team piled three hits up (Jordan Schafer and Young for Myrtle Beach and Josh Flores and Justin Tellam for the Avalanche).

The 13 innings and 4 hours and 12 minutes were season longs for the Avalanche who fell to 33 in extra innings.

Turn and face the strain: The Avalanche learned after the game that two of its players, Josh Flores and Tommy Manzella were promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi. Flores went 3-for-6 last night to raise his average to .325, third in the Carolina League. He was also third in the circuit with 24 stolen bases. Manzella did not play last night and leaves the Avalanche with a .238 batting average. His four game-winning hits after the seventh inning were more than the rest of the team combined for (three). Both players spent Monday through Wednesday in Stockton, California for the California League-Carolina League All-Star Game. The two players are replaced on the roster by a pair of infielders, Tim Torres and Christopher Johnson. Torres spent nine days with the Avalanche at the end of May and beginning of June and hit in his final seven. Johnson, the Astros fourth-round pick last year, was hitting .259 with a team-leading 44 RBI. He was tied for the most on the Legends with eight long balls.

Runs Don't Equal Wins: The Avalanche plated five runs last night, but fell to the Pelicans by one. It was just the fifth time in 38 occurrences this season in which the Avalanche lost while plating five runs or more.

Hits Don't Equal Wins: Salem placed 15 hits on the board last night compared to Myrtle Beach's 14. Salem is 33-4 in 2007 when accumulating more hits than its opponent.

Long Starts Don't Equal Wins: Salem lefty Chris Salamida made it through six innings last night while Myrtle Beach righty starter Sergio Valenzuela finished just three innings. The Avs are now 30-8 when its foe uses its bullpen first in a given game.

Errors Don't Equal wins: Myrtle Beach committed four errors in Thursday night's game. Salem is now 7-3 when its challenger makes three or more defensive mistakes.
