Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Every summer the top prospects in Minor League Baseball gather at the Major League All-Star week for the annual XM Futures Game. Players are selected from each of the 30 Major League organizations and this year the Atlanta Braves will be represented by Myrtle Beach Pelicans shortstop Elvis Andrus. Not only will the 18-year-old from Maracay, Venezuela represent the Braves, but he'll also be playing for his native country as a member of the World Team in the XM Futures Game, which will be played on Sunday, July 8.

"I was a little surprised when I found out that I was named to the World Team," said Andrus, during batting practice in Salem, Virginia. "I'm very excited and it's a great feeling for any minor leaguer to be picked for the Futures Game."

Andrus is hitting .224 with two home runs, 21 RBI and 19 stolen bases this season for Myrtle Beach. Defensively he has made more than his fair share of highlight-reel plays and has impressed coaches, teammates, and scouts throughout the season.

"Elvis is an 18-year-old playing in a league with players that are 24 or 25 years old and he's shown that he can make every play at this level," said Pelicans Hitting Coach Rick Albert. "If you think about it this would technically be his senior year of high school, which is amazing considering how he's developed."

Andrus is one of 25 international players and one of eight Venezuelans comprising the World Team roster. Eleven different countries are represented on the World Team, and the eight players from Venezuela account for the most of any country involved.

"I am very proud to be playing for my country and it's great for Venezuela to have that many players in the Futures Game," said Andrus.

The slick-fielding shortstop, who will not turn 19 until August 26, entered this season as the youngest player in the Carolina League. He is listed as the #2 prospect in the Atlanta organization and is projected by many publications and scouts as the future shortstop for Braves.
