Myrtle Musings...
Lucky 13...Myrtle Beach blew three leads and committed four errors last night, but the Pelicans still managed to start the second half on a positive note when C Jose Camarena bounced the eventual game-winning single over the top of the first base bag to score Matt Young from second in the top of the 13th inning. Prior to that hit Camarena had gone 0-5 with four strikeouts, showing as always that it's not how many you get, but rather when you get them. LHP Adam Stanley earned the win in relief with 2.1 shutout innings, but it was far from seven up, seven down. Stanley allowed two hits, three walks and did not record a strikeout, yet still managed to strand runners at second and third in the 11th and then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the 12th as the Avalanche left a staggering 19 runners on base last night. LHP Kevin Gunderson, whose day began at 4 a.m. when he left Omaha, Nebraska, left men on the corners in the bottom of the 13th for his seventh save in eight chances.
The Future is Here Today...Pelicans SS Elvis Andrus didn't make the Carolina League All-Star team (some would say he was snubbed, but that's editorializing), but got an even bigger honor yesterday when he was named to the World team for the ninth-annual XM All-Star Futures Game. The contest, which pits the top-25 American prospects in the minor leagues against the best 25 prospects from outside our borders, will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 8th at AT&T Park in San Francisco in conjunction with the Major League All-Star break. Ironically, the Pelicans could have had two representatives on the World team as Kinston catcher Max Ramirez was also selected. Ramirez opened last year in Class A Rome and would have been ticketed to spend 2007 in Myrtle Beach, but was traded to Cleveland last July in exchange for closer Bob Wickman.
Young at Heart...RF Matt Young, Myrtle Beach's hyper-competitive five-hole hitter, had accounted for three outs and had ended the inning twice in his first two at-bats, but reached base his final four times to the plate and served as the catalyst in last night's victory. Young collected a two-out single in the sixth and then scored all the way from first on 2B Paul Bennett's double into the right field corner to tie the game at 4-4, and then put the Birds ahead 5-4 with an RBI single in the eighth. He later drew an intentional walk in the 10th and then led off the 13th with an infield single and scored the winning run.
Did You Know...Last night's 13-inning marathon may have been Myrtle Beach's longest game of the year, but it was not the longest game between these two clubs. Myrtle Beach edged Salem 2-1 in 14 innings back on May 31st, 1999.
