
Komets home opener set for November 5

Fort Wayne, IN - The United Hockey League released it's 2005-06 season schedule today and the Komets will begin their 7th UHL season with a pair of games at Roanoke Valley, Virginia Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 and will be a part of the Viper's UHL debut as Roanoke Valley becomes the new home of the old Port Huron Beacons franchise.
The Komets begin the season with a total of 5 road games over the first 2 weekends allowing time for the installation of a new ice floor at the War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. The 54th season of Komet hockey in Fort Wayne gets underway with the Komet's home opener Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Motor City Mechanics at 7:30pm. It's only the 5th November Komet home opener in the history of the Fort Wayne franchise. The last time the Komets opened at home in November was Nov. 9, 2002 against the Quad City Mallards.
NOVEMBER KOMET HOME OPENERS:
Saturday, Nov. 1, 1958 vs Indianapolis Chiefs (6-4 win)
Saturday, Nov. 3, 1962 vs Muskegon Zephers (7-3 win)
Saturday, Nov. 2, 1963 vs Windsor Bulldogs (4-3 loss)
Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 vs Quad City Mallards (3-1 win)
The 2005-06 Komet schedule is a 76-game slate with 38 home games and 38 road games. The Komets have home games scheduled on 12 Fridays, 12 Saturdays and 9 Sundays. The 2 traditional Komet home holiday games are Thanksgiving (vs Quad City) and New Year's Eve (vs Roanoke Valley). "I think it's the best Komet schedule we have ever had in the UHL," Komet President Michael Franke said. "We play 34 of 38 home games on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays which should make this schedule very attractive to our fans." The Komets will skate 1 Tuesday home game and 3 Wednesday home games. The Komets will skate a rare Monday road game Dec. 26 at Quad City.
The Komets will have 2 home-and-home series during the season Dec. 26/27 against Quad City and Nov. 19/20 against Rockford. There are 2 trips east, one to start the season at Roanoke Valley and the other beginning Dec. 7 when the Komets travel to Elmira, Roanoke Valley, Richmond and Danbury. Only Adirondack will not receive a visit from the Komets this season.
The Komets have a total of 7 home doubleheader weekends. Fourteen sets of 3 games in 3 nights take up 42 games of the 76-game schedule (13 Fri-Sat-Sun, 1 Thu-Fri-Sat). The Komets will play 3 road games in 3 nights twice (Oct. 28, 29, 30 and Dec. 9, 10, 11). Fort Wayne is on the road for 5 games in 8 nights twice (Dec. 4-11 and Feb. 19-26) and will skate 4 road games in 5 nights April 5-9 to close out the road portion of the campaign. The Komets will remain in the UHL's Western Division with Missouri, Quad City and Rockford and will face their division rivals the most. The Komets will tangle with Quad City 11 times (6 in Fort Wayne, 5 at Quad City), Missouri 10 times (4-6) and Rockford 10 times (6-4) for a total of 31 meetings against the West. The Komets will finish the season at home Saturday, April 15 vs Kalamazoo.
Komet home start times for 2005-06 are unchanged from last season: Monday-Thursday and Saturday 7:30pm, Friday 8pm and Sunday 5pm.
