Brampton Beast News Release
FORT WAYNE, INDIANA - The Brampton Beast turned in a superb effort at both ends of the ice but the Fort Wayne Komets goaltending duo of Eric Hartzell and Pat Nagle was nearly unbeatable, leading the Komets to a 4-2 win over the Beast at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne on Monday night.
The Komets came out flying in the early moments of the first period as Curtis Leonard opened the scoring for Fort Wayne just 33 seconds into the contest.
It didn't take long for the high-flying Beast offense to respond. Luke Pither and David Vallorani helped set up defenseman Reggie Traccitto for the goal at 11:43, tying the game at 1-1.
The scored remained that way until the 7:48 mark of the second frame as Taylor Crunk pounced on a rebound in front of Beast starting goaltender Bryan Pitton, giving the Komets a 2-1 edge.
Pitton looked sharp during his 31:21 of playing time and made 16 saves. Andrew D'Agostini took over between the pipes to play the second half of the contest and made five saves in the latter half of the second period to keep the score close heading into the final frame.
The Komets once again surged to start the period and were able to capitalize as Shawn Szydlowski scored to make it a 3-1 Komets lead just 1:19 into the final frame.
Second-year forward and 2015-16 Fan Favourite Luc Blain sent some energy through the Beast bench in scoring his first goal of the preseason with 3:43 remaining in the game.
The Komets' Kyle Thomas hit the empty net with just over a minute remaining to end any hopes of a Beast comeback.
In spite of the Komets' regulation victory, the clubs played an exhibition overtime period, which saw Beast defenseman Mike Vernace light the lamp just 20 seconds into the extra frame, making it an unofficial 4-3 Komets final score.
Komets starter Hartzell played the first two periods for the Komets and stopped all but one of the 20 shots he faced. Pat Nagle entered in relief in the third period and made nine saves.
D'Agostini turned in a strong second-half performance and finished the game allowing one goal on 14 shots against.
Notes: The Beast were outshot 33-29. Brampton finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play and were a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. The Beast have now completed their three-game preseason schedule and finish with a record of 1-2-0-0.
Brampton kicks off its regular season schedule next Saturday, October 15 as the club heads to WesBanco Arena to face the Wheeling Nailers. Game time is scheduled for 7:05PM.
The Beast then head back to the Powerade Centre for the 2016-17 Home Opener against the Toledo Walleye on Friday, October 21 at 7:15PM.
