Perfect preseason

The Jackals played three preseason games last week and went a perfect 3-0-0-0 in their tune ups before the regular season. They defeated the Brampton Beast, 4-2, in Kingston, Ont. on Oct. 4 and then swept a home-and-home series with the Reading Royals by scores of 3-1 and 6-0 over the weekend.

Elmira outscored its opponents 13-3 in the three games and their special teams played a role as well, with the Jackals scoring three power-play goals in the preseason while their penalty kill was perfect.

The Jackals also won their only preseason game last season, winning 5-2 against Reading in 2015.

Multi-goal efforts

The Jackals had three multi-goal performances in the three preseason games. Zach Luczyk had two multi-goal games, scoring twice against Brampton and then following that up with a two-goal game Saturday against Reading. He also had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick in Saturday's win over Reading.

Rookie Todd Christian, a Clarkson University product, also had two goals in Saturday's win against the Royals. He had an assist to finish with a three-point night.

Preseason Game 1: Jackals open preseason slate with win over Brampton

The Jackals overcame a slow start to defeat the Brampton Beast, 4-2, in the ECHL's first preseason game Oct. 4 at INVISTA Centre in Kingston, Ontario.

After a sluggish first period in which the Jackals went behind 1-0, the team came to life in the second to pull even. They got their forecheck going and at 5:34 of the second period Horseheads native Joel Wetmore poked in a free puck in the crease to tie the score at one.

The Jackals took control in the third period, scoring three times en route to a 4-2 win. Rookie forward Zach Luczyk gave the Jackals their first lead at 2:04 of the third, banking in a shot off the goalie to make it 2-1. After the Beast tied the game at two, the Jackals responded to regain the lead at 11:40, with Lou Educate firing home a shot from the slot immediately following a power play to make it 3-2. Luczyk iced the game with an empty-net goal to give the Jackals a 4-2 cushion late in the third.

Preseason Game 2: Stout defensive effort paces Jackals to 3-1 win in Reading

The Jackals stymied the Reading Royals offense all night as Elmira pulled out a 3-1 win at Santander Arena in Reading Friday night, improving to 2-0-0-0 in the 2016-17 preseason.

The Jackals dominated the first period and were rewarded with a goal late in the period. Casey Thrush fired in a rebound from the left circle with 3:26 left in the first to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead, in a period that saw the Jackals outshoot Reading 13-5.

The momentum carried over immediately into the second period as Lou Educate doubled the lead 25 seconds into the period, scoring into an open net after a Reading turnover. Later in the period, Rich Botting snapped in a power-play goal to give the Jackals a 3-0 lead at 9:41, with the goal coming immediately off a face off win.

The Royals spoiled Dalton McGrath's shutout bid with 3:05 left in regulation, with Zach Hall scoring on a rush down the right wing, but the Jackals still won, 3-1, while outshooting Reading 33-15 in the game.

Preseason Game 3: Jackals shut out Royals to finish perfect preseason

Rookie goalie Tyler Parks made 32 saves as the Elmira Jackals rolled to a 6-0 win over the Reading Royals at First Arena Saturday night.

Todd Christian opened the scoring for the Jackals with a power-play goal coming on a wraparound at 10:11 of the first period. They scored three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead after two. Christian got his second of the game at 6:13 of the second, snapping a shot in from the slot to make it 2-0. Zach Luczyk gave the Jackals a 3-0 lead, scoring on a rebound in the slot with six minutes left in the second and Ryan Wilkinson capped the scoring in the period with a wrist shot from the point with 54 seconds left in the frame.

The Jackals scored twice more in the third, building their advantage up to six, with Luczyk scoring his second of the game at 11:10 and Chris Joseph scoring a power-play goal at 15:42. Parks was at his best in the second period, stopping all 15 shots he faced, and he secured his first professional shutout with nine third-period saves.

Week Ahead

Game 1: Sat., Oct. 15 at Reading, 7:00 p.m.

The Jackals and Royals renew their rivalry to open the 2016-17 season Saturday night in Reading in the first of 10 head-to-head matches between the teams. They will face each other five times at Santander Arena in Reading and five times at First Arena in Elmira.

The Royals played two exhibition games during the 2016 preseason and lost both to the Jackals by a combined score of 9-1. Reading lost 3-1 at home Friday night and then dropped a 6-0 decision in Elmira the next night. This is the only game of opening weekend for the Royals.

While the final season opening roster for the Royals won't be set until Wednesday afternoon, among their current group of players Robbie Czarnik is the top returning scorer from last season. He finished third on the team with 46 points (23g, 23a) in 51 games. Mike Pereira, another returner from last season, was sixth on the team with 43 points (19g, 24a) in 47 games.

As of today, the Royals have two goalies on the roster, Martin Ouellette and Mark Dekanich. Ouellette was 17-10-3-0 last season with the Royals and he had a 2.10 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. In four appearances against Elmira last season he allowed just seven goals and had a 3-0-0-0 record. He allowed six goals in Saturday's preseason loss to the Jackals. Dekanich was 20-9-2-2 in 35 games with South Carolina in 2015-16.
