Cam Cunning snapped a tie late in the third period to propel the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to a 3-1 win over the Houston Aeros at the Civic Auditorium. It was the Knights' sixth straight win, and it moved them into first place in the West Division.

The Knights were sluggish in the first period as the Aeros outshot them 12-6.

Omaha had a quick start in the second period. Less than three minutes in, Brad Ference sent Warren Peters away down the left wing. He cut around defenseman Curtis Murphy and got off a backhander. It was stopped by goalie Dieter Kochan, but Peters took a swipe at the rebound and knocked it in for his eleventh goal of the year.

The Aeros responded just 1:03 later. Matt Foy got free behind the Knights' net and centered to Danny Irmen who rammed the puck past Curtis McElhinney to make it 1-1.

The Knights could find little room to operate in the third period, but they took advantage of the one seam they could find. Dustin Boyd collected a pass, raced down the left wing and fed Cunning who redirected the puck past Kochan to make it 2-1 at 16:17.

Peters added an empty net goal off an assist from Boyd in the final minute to seal the win. Peters now has three goals in the last two games.

The Knights are now 37-19-3-1. They set a new franchise record with their seventeenth home win. They lead the Chicago Wolves by one point in the standings.

Three Stars: 1. Warren Peters (OMA) - 2 goals; 2. Curtis McElhinney (OMA) - 24 saves; 3. Dieter Kochan (HOU) - 22 saves

The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights have the weekend off. They return to action on Wednesday, March 7 when they host the Iowa Stars at 7:00 p.m. They'll conclude their five-game home stand on Friday and Saturday, March 9 and 10 when they host the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7:00 p.m.
