Charlotte Knights News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Zach Stewart was Charlotte's scheduled starter on Sunday. On Wednesday, he faced his former teammates in Pawtucket as a member of the PawSox.
Stewart allowed just one run over 5.2 innings, Mauro Gomez hit his 17thhome run of the season, and the Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Charlotte Knights 5-1 on Wednesday in game two of the four-game series. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak by the PawSox.
Just a little over a week ago, Stewart was the starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox against the Chicago Cubs in an interleague matchup. A day after suffering the loss he was optioned to Charlotte. Just days later, he was slotted into Charlotte's rotation and scheduled to pitch on Sunday, June 24. That never happened.
Before Stewart ever threw a pitch for the Knights in 2012, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox along with Brent Lillibridge, in exchange for Kevin Youkilis. Boston sent him to Pawtucket, who would host the Knights for a four-game series beginning on Tuesday.
Making his PawSox debut on Wednesday, Stewart did not allow a run until the sixth inning, when he gave up an RBI single to Dallas McPherson. Stewart was relieved by Will Inman, who got Hector Gimenez down on strikes to end the inning. In all, Stewart allowed one run on six hits over 5.2 innings to earn the win. He struck-out four batters.
Charlie Leesman (7-6, 2.45) got the start for Charlotte and allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings and was saddled with the loss. Leesman, who was named to the 2012 International League All-Star Team earlier in the day, walked one and struck-out five. He lost for the second straight game.
McPherson and Conor Jackson led the way offensively for first place Charlotte (45-36). Both players had two hits each on Wednesday night.
Greg Golson, Dan Johnson and Josh Phegley were also named IL All-Stars earlier in the day. Only Charlotte and Pawtucket had four players named to the squad. The two teams will continue their series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Simon Castro will make his second start of the season for Charlotte, while the PawSox will send RHP Brandon Duckworth to the mound.
