Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - As a catcher, Francisco Cervelli knows just how important run support is to his pitcher. He provided just that with an RBI single to left field, breaking a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh, leading the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee (43-37) past the Gwinnett Braves (37-44) 3-2 on Wednesday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York.
The Yankees struck first in the bottom half of the fifth inning on an RBI single to center off the bat of Ronnier Mustelier. Cervelli was thrown out at third for the second out in the inning as he tried to advance from first. Mustelier's 31st RBI of the season gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the 1-0. Brandon Laird extended the Yankee lead to 2-0 with a solo blast to left-center in the home half of the sixth. Laird's fourth homer of the year proved to be a big one as the Braves offense woke up in the top half of the seventh.
Gwinnett came all the way back in the inning, tying the score at 2-2. The Braves first run came on a Luis Durango RBI single to right field, which plated J.C. Boscan. Later in the inning, Manny Delcarmen issued a bases loaded walk to Ruben Gotay, allowing Jose Costanza to jog in from third.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre struck right back in the home half of the seventh. Chris Dickerson got things started in the inning with a one out triple to the left-centerfield gap. Cervelli then came up and crushed an RBI single over Gotay's head at third base allowing Dickerson to come home from third and giving the Yankees the 3-2 advantage.
Veteran right-hander Ramon Ortiz was terrific yet again for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He pitched six innings of shutout ball, allowing just six hits, while striking out two and walking a pair. Despite his effort, he did not get the win. Manny Delcarmen was on the mound when the Yankees took the lead and closed out the game earning his second win of the season. Former Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee Buddy Carlyle suffered the loss for the Braves, falling to 3-2 on the season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Gwinnett take the diamond tomorrow evening at 7:05 for game three of a four game series at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York. The Yankees send right-hander John Maine (1-2, 12.00) to the hill, while the Braves counter with Julio Teheran (5-4, 3.50).
