Charlotte Knights News Release
UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of the six-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers by a score of 10-7 from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte on Sunday night. The Stripers took all six games in the series.
Offensively, the Knights put together a strong first inning, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first frame. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of right fielder Tyler Naquin and an RBI double from Nate Mondou. After one inning, the Knights held a 5-1 lead over Gwinnett.
The Stripers battled back and scored four runs over the next two innings, getting two runs in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth inning. First baseman Joe Dunand connected on his 15th home run of the season in the third inning.
Charlotte first baseman Xavier Fernández broke a 5-5 tie as he launched his first home run of the season with the Knights, a solo blast in the bottom of the third inning of Sunday's game. Unfortunately for the Knights, that was the last time the team would hold a lead in the finale.
Gwinnett fought back to score three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead. The team scored two more runs along the way to go on for the 10-7 win.
LHP Garrett Davila (2-8, 6.59) started Sunday's game for the Knights and was charged with the loss after he allowed seven runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings pitched.
For the Stripers, Justus Sheffield earned the win after he gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5.1 innings pitched. In all, the Stripers tallied 10 runs on 16 hits in the win.
The Knights, who are now 6-33 in the second half, will have an off day on Monday before heading to Nashville, TN to open a six-game series against the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers) on Tuesday. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on www.CharlotteKnights.com. First pitch on Tuesday night is set for 7:35 p.m. from Nashville, TN.
