Blankenhorn Homers Again as Wings Fall in Extras

The Rochester Red Wings fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 9-7, in an extra-inning affair Sunday afternoon. The Wings forced extras with an RBI infield single from 1B Jake Noll and a sacrifice fly from SS Richie Martin, but allowed two runs in the top of the 10th, falling for the ninth time in 14 games against the IronPigs.

Lehigh Valley started off the scoring in the top of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead after CF Cal Stevenson brought in 2B Esteban Quiroz on a sacrifice fly out. In the top of the fourth, the IronPigs extended their lead to 2-0 on a solo home run off the bat of 3B Drew Ellis. The Wings got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead to 2-1 when RF Erick Mejia hit a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in 3B Carter Kieboom.

The Wings continued the scoring effort in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 5-2 lead on four hits. Kieboom knocked an RBI single, bringing in CF Cody Wilson to tie the game. Then, LF Travis Blankenhorn followed with a three-run home run, his 21st of the season and sixth through 10 games in August. 1B Darick Hall added a run back for Lehigh Valley in the top of the seventh with a solo home run of his own, his fifth homer against the Wings this season, moving the score to 5-3.

Ellis cut Rochester's lead to 5-4 with an RBI double, and 2B Esteban Quiroz tied the game in the next at bat, roping an RBI double off the top of the wall in center field. Three batters later, C Max McDowell gave the IronPigs their first lead of the day on a two-run single to put them ahead 7-5. After two walks, 1B Jake Noll collected an infield single that brought in Kieboom, cutting the deficit to 7-6. SS Richie Martin followed up Noll with a sacrifice fly out that brought in Blankenhorn to tie the game.

The Wings held on to send the game to extra innings, but were tagged with two runs on an RBI single from Quiroz. Rochester was unable to come back in the bottom of the 10th despite loading the bases and fell to the IronPigs, 9-7.

Rochester finished 2-for-3 on ABS Challenges, while the IronPigs went 1-for-4.

RHP Tommy Romero started on the mound for Rochester, submitting 3.1 innings of work, allowing two earned runs on five hits while walking two. RHP Hobie Harris entered first out of the bullpen and went 1.2 innings in his scoreless outing, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out a pair. RHP Luis Cessa saw his first appearance of the series, going 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits, striking out three and walking one.

RHP Daniel Mengden and RHP Joel Peguero worked 2.2 scoreless innings, combining for a strikeout, four hits and a walk to lift the Wings to extras. LHP Alex Troop (0-2, 24.75) worked the final inning, allowing one earned run on a hit and a walk while striking out a batter, taking the loss.

LF Travis Blankenhorn earned Sunday's Diamond Pro Player of the Game award after going 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, a walk and two runs scored. The lefty has now homered in six of the last 10 games and has scored a run in eight-straight, the most since Drew Maggi in 2019 (nine games).

Rochester will head to Buffalo on Tuesday for the start of a six-game series with the Bisons. First pitch set for 7:05 pm.
