Louisville Bats News Release
PAUL, MN -- Lyon Richardson struck out five batters while Jose Barrero and Noelvi Marte combined for three hits and three RBI as the Louisville Bats (59-52) dropped their fifth straight to the St. Paul Saints (66-46) 8-4 on Saturday night.
Alejo Lopez opened the game with yet another leadoff walk, extending his on-base streak to 42 consecutive games. Lopez's streak is now tied with Joey Votto for the franchise record, set by Votto in 2007.
In the top of the second, Noelvi Marte used his speed to give the Bats a 1-0 lead after he stole third base then came around to score thanks to a pair of St. Paul errors.
Making his second career start in triple-A, right-hander Lyon Richardson (0-0, 1.42) delivered 3.1 strong innings, striking out five and surrendering just one earned run on hit while walking three.
The Saints took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of walks and a three-run home run.
The Bats loaded the bases in the top of the fifth after walks to Michael Siani, Alejo Lopez and Nick Martini. Louisville regained the lead 4-3 after all three crossed the plate thanks to consecutive RBI singles from Noelvi Marte and Jose Barrero.
St. Paul erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth behind three walks and a pair of base hits to put themselves back ahead 7-4 through five frames.
The Saints added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth after a run scored on a Christian Roa wild pitch. It was the only blemish in three innings of relief for Roa (4-8, 5.78) who struck out four and gave up only two hits. The wild pitch stretched the St. Paul lead to 8-4 where it would hold for the rest of the contest.
The series will conclude Sunday afternoon with first pitch for game six at 3:07 pm EST from CHS FIeld in St. Paul. Righty Ben Lively (4-0, 2.33) will take the hill for the Bats against fellow right-hander Carlos Luna (0-0, 0.00) who will be making his triple-A debut for the Saints.
