Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- Pittsburgh Pirates' starting pitcher Kip Wells is expected to join the Altoona Curve for an injury rehab start next Thursday night, June 15th, at Blair County Ballpark against the Harrisburg Senators. Wells has not pitched for Pittsburgh this season after undergoing surgery in early March to repair a blocked artery in his right arm.
The Curve will be the second stop on Wells' three-team minor league rehab tour. He will also pitch for Class-A Lynchburg this Saturday and make his final minor league start on June 20th for Triple-A Indianapolis before possibly returning to the Pirates' starting rotation.
Wells will be the second Pirates' standout to rehab an injury with the Curve in the span of three weeks. Two weekends ago, Pirates' first baseman and three-time National League All-Star Sean Casey was with the Curve for three games in Erie after recovering from two fractured bones in his lower back. Prior to Casey's rehab appearance, the last big league player to join Altoona on an injury assignment was pitcher Ryan Vogelsong in July 2002.
The 29-year old Wells is in his fifth season in the Pirates' system after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago White Sox in December 2001. Since joining Pittsburgh and subsequently becoming one of the club's top starters, the Texas native has posted a 35-48 record and a 4.07 ERA.
Next Thursday's game against Harrisburg will be played at 7:05 PM and great seats are still available by visiting the Curve Ticket Office at Blair County Ballpark, by calling toll-free 877-99-CURVE or by logging on to www.altoonacurve.com.
The Curve will open a six-game homestand at BCB on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM with the first game of the Harrisburg series. Altoona will remain home thru Sunday, June 18, including a three-game set against the Reading Phillies.
